Annual Dinner Dance
As I write, there are probably a few people who are still feeling a little fragile after our annual dinner last Saturday night. Over 200 people packed into the Failte Suite of the Welcome Inn Hotel to celebrate the football and hurling achievements of Mitchels in the first year of the new Century. Pride of place on the night went to the Castlebar Senior Hurlers who won the Genfitt cup and to the junior football team that won the West Mayo junior title after a lapse of 18 years. Everybody present will agree that this was a very enjoyable function. A big thank you must go to the 'big man' on Main Street who organized a marvelous night's entertainment for us.

On the football front, Brian McLoughlin picked up the Junior Player of the Year award. The members of the Junior team who won the West Mayo title were presented with their medals by P.J.McGrath. At senior level Declan Shaw was a well deserving winner of the Senior Player of the Year Award. This rounded off a memorable year for Declan who got married recently to Yvonne McCaffrey. No doubt Yvonne will keep him fit and healthy in the year to come. Clubman of the Yearwent to the hard working Liam Quinn for his efforts in McHale Park. Very popular joint winners of the Hall of Fame award were Mick and Breege Ruane. The received the reward to honour their lifetime of service to the club.![]() Presentation to Liam Quinn, Clubman of the year Left to right: James Rocke (Club Secretary), Liam Quinn, Michael Diskin (Club Chairman). After all the presentations, we were treated to a marathon feast of entertainment. First up were the mime artists 'The Knuts' (all the way from Meath). Just when it felt like we should be heading home, P.J. Duffy and his band helped us to dance the night away. John Gleeson rounded off the night with his mix of disco numbers. If you survived that menu you deserved a special award for stamina! Congratulations to the management and staff of the Welcome Inn Hotel for serving up such a wonderful meal for us! Congratulations to Wally and Sharon Flynn who celebrated their 6th anniversary on the night. Club announces new sponsor! Club Chairman Michael Diskin announced at our annual dinner dance that the club had been successful in completing a new three year sponsorship deal with Tony McHugh. This will be a major boost to the clubs efforts to underpin the development of football and hurling within the club over the next few years.
Congratulations to Declan 'The Bullet' and Sandy O'Reilly who celebrated the birth of their first baby, Ultan Jack, during the week. Delighted to hear that both mother and baby are doing well. Declan will have some excuse now for missing training! Rumor has it that Declan was seen calling out to his mother May during the week to do a crash course in nappy changing. What name is appropriate for the son of a 'bullet'? Answer next week!

Mayo will play Kildare in McHale Park on the weekend of May 12th to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the opening of the pitch. It is quite ironic that it was the same pairing which opened the pitch in May 1931. Martin Moran is coordinating the club's plans to commemorate the occasion.
