Mitchels drawn against South Mayo in the senior championship! The draw for the senior championship took place in the Welcome Inn Hotel last Wednesday night and was featured live on Mid West Radio. Our own Willie the Shoe hosted the programme. Castlebar Mitchels were the first team out of the hat and were drawn at home to South Mayo. The first round games will be played on the weekend of May 20th. The senior championship takes on a new format this year with a section for the first round losers who will re-enter the championship at county semi final stage. Other first round pairings include: Knockmore V Ballinrobe Ballina v Burrishoole Charlestown V Crossmolina Garrymore V Ballintubber Swinford V Moy Davitts East Mayo v Hollymount The following teams were given a bye in the first round: Kiltane, Mayo Gaels, North Mayo, Davitts, West Mayo. It will make for an interesting championship. Back to top The Mitchels Senior football team were invited to take part in the Irish Independent (Paidi O Se) football tournament in Ventry last weekend. Castlebar Mitchels was one of eight teams throughout the country invited to play in this tournament. The other teams taking part included Fingallians (Dublin), Moyle Rovers (Tipperary), Ballinasloe (Galway), Gaeltacht (Kerry), Tirconaill Gaels (London), Dingle (Kerry), Ballincollig (Cork). The tournament was run on a knockout basis. Castlebar played Ballincollig in the quarter-final but were beaten on a scoreline of 3-7 to 0-9. Ballincollig is a very good outfit and eventually qualified for the final against Fingallians. Senior team manager Joe McCabe brought a panel of approx. 25 players to Kerry for the weekend. The travelling party also included Michael and Mary Diskin and family, Mick and Breege Ruane and team selectors Mickey Feeney and John Fahey. The team that lined out against Ballincollig was: Ciaran Naughton, Timmy Byrne, Jamie Fitzmaurice, Brian McLoughlin, John Fahy, Brian Hennelly, Declan Shaw, Shane Fitzmaurice, Russell Gibbons, Paul Fitzmaurice, Paul Jordan (0-1), Kevin Malone, Ian Walsh, Diarmuid Byrne (0-2), Kevin Filan (0-6, 4f). Subs: Mark Moore, Darragh Larkin, Eoin Keane, James McGovern, Brian Regan, Liam Raftery, Keith Gillick, Michael Durcan, Ronan Ruane, Christy Flaherty. This will serve as a good preparation for the league that starts in early April. While the scheme is optional, the club strongly recommends to all players to avail of this scheme if they are not adequately covered by medical insurance. The premium involved is only £20 pounds for senior players and £10 for juvenile players. Membership forms include a section on this insurance option.
