Mr. Liam Durkan was appointed the new chairman of the Castlebar Tidy Towns committee. This appointment will take immediate effect. Liam is also the current secretary of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce. He succeeds Joe Butler who has chairman for the past 5 years.
Joe Butler thanked his fellow committee members for their support and loyalty during his term of office. He said that the Tidy Towns had generated a wonderful civic spirit within all sections of the community, and that Castlebar was a better place because of everyone's efforts. He paid tribute to the Statutory Bodies, State Agencies, Voluntary Groups, Resident Associations, Clubs, Schools and the business sector for supporting the campaign during the past five years. He felt it was now time for change and that he was now handing over the reins of command to Liam Durkan who will lead the organisation into the new millennium with vigour and enthusiasm. Joe will remain on as an ordinary committee member.
