Tidy Towns Results

Tidy Towns Market Square Survey

Press Release 15th September '99

Castlebar has once again increased its points in the National Tidy Towns Competition. This year's results saw gains in the Overall Development Approach (+1), Landscaping (+1), Wildlife and Natural Amenities (+2), Roads, Streets and Back Areas (+2). This increase of 6 points now brings Castlebar's total to 204 points. This points total now consolidates Castlebar's position of 4th in the County and 14th of 36 in Category E of the competition (town with a population between 5,000 & 10,000). Along with exceeding the 200 point mark Castlebar also achieved a second adjudication (for the first time) from the judges in August. This is a clear indication that Castlebar can be a contendor for a category award in the medium term but a greater increase year on year would be required. The increase of 6 points is in keeping with the increase seen in other towns and a lot of work in all areas in still required to achieve the overall accolade. Castlebar has also achieved its first individual award with Connections of New Antrim St. receiving the Regional Ireland West for Best New Shopfront.

The adjudicators in their report recognised the amount of development currently taking place and expressed the view that the focus on the town centre should not be lost in the development of other areas. They also noted that litter control was to a mixed standard, particularly in the town centre and town river. Improvements are needed in this regard.

The Tidy Towns Committee is happy that the report was a fair and accurate assessment of the town. We wish to thank the councillors, officials and staff of Castlebar U.D.C., Mayo Co. Council, castlebar Chamber of Commerce, Community Employment Project/FAS, Student Summer Job Scheme, Resident Associations, Clubs, Schools, Business Sector and countless individuals who helped in any way over the past 12 months in helping Castlebar gain the 6 additional points.
