A Few Reminders for this Week:

1. A book fair for second -hand books will be held on Thursday evening 26th June 2008 at 7 .00 p.m. in the Community Centre. By then all the pupils will have been issued with their book lists for the coming year.

2) One Induction Day for next years junior infants will be held on Wednesday June 25 th 2008 from 9.30 a.m. to 12 Noon . Uniforms and school bags not required. Just a drink and a little snack

We wish you all a very happy restful holiday. School Closes for Summer Holidays for all pupils on Frida y 27th June 2008 @ 12.30p.m .

Mass.
On Friday afternoon June 20th there was a Mass in the school for the pupils and parents of 6 th class. We wish to thank Fr. Pat Burke, and Mr Tuohy for the very beautiful Mass which they had prepared. Each 6 th class pupil was presented with a certificate to acknowledge the end of their Primary School Education. We wish the 6 th class every success and happiness in post-primary school. A special word of farewell to those families whose last child will be finishing in the school. We thank them for all their help and support over the years.

Sports Day; A very successful sports day was held on Wednesday 30 th June 2008. We also acknowledge with gratitude the generous sponsorship of the parents association towards the cost of running sports day. The prizes will be presented before the end of June. Thanks to all the parents who took time off to give their support to the children. Their presence lent atmosphere to the occasion.

Confirmation:
We wish to congratulate the pupils in sixth class who made their Confirmation. We wish to thank their class teacher Mr Peter Tuohy for the wonderful work which he did in preparing the pupils for the big day. Great credit is due to both he and the pupils for the beautiful art work which adorned the church on the day. Thanks is also due to Ms Cawley Mrs Cooney and Sr. Margo for training and conducting the choir. A word of appreciation to Mrs Catherine Reilly (school secretary) for the wonderful booklet which she prepared with the children, everyone was impressed by same. Thank you for ensuring that your child(ren) was/were present in good time on the day for the choir and the ceremony. They did us proud. May the Holy Spirit remain with the pupils and guide the throughout their lives.

School Tours:
On Thursday June 5th Junior & Senior Infants together with Ms Cawley and Ms Cafferkey & Ms Duffy had a very enjoyable trip to Westport House.

On Tuesday 13th May 2008 first and second classes with their teachers Ms Rowley, Mrs Murrihy & Ms Heneghan visited the seashore at Old Head Louisbough and Croagh Patrick. It was a very educational experience for all involved.

On Tuesday, June 9th the pupils of 3rd & 4th spent the day in the Breaffy International Sports Hall, where a day packed full of activities was enjoyed by all.

On Wednesday 28th May the pupils from 5th & 6th classes visited Achill Adventure centre. Where the pupils took part in many interesting activities. An annual trip to an adventure centre is one of the recommendations now contained in the revised P.E. Curriculum.

Art:
A Sculptor Artist Sally McKenna visited the school and facilitated a very interesting workshop for the pupils of 5 th class. They also travelled to Turlough house to take part in a work shop based on the Book of Kells.

Games:
The boys football team had victories over Claremorris & Ballinrobe in recent matches. They were narrowly defeated by Westport.

Congratulations to the Girls Camogie team who represented Mayo in Athenry on May. They beat Sligo but conceded victory to Galway on Saturday. Well done on reaching the final of the Camogie blitz yesterday. They were narrowly beaten by one point in the final by Tooreen.

Hurling :
We wish to sincerely thank Mr. Ger Whyte on all the wonderful work he has done to foster the skill of Hurling & Camogie here in Snugboro . He has instilled in the pupils an enthusiasm and interest in the sport and he has developed the skills of the children to an excellent standard and brought them to a level we could only dream of.

Food Allergy: Please see attached letter regarding the enrolment in September. This child has a very serious nut allergy. Your continued support and co-operation in this matter will be very much appreciated.

Easter Holidays:
School will close on Friday 14 th March 2008 at 12.30p.m.
We will reopen on Monday 31 st March 2008

The buses will pick up the children at 12.30p.m. If your child(ren) do not come to school by bus please make your own private arrangements to collect your child(ren) at this time.

School Band:
The school band will be taking part in the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, which will be held on Monday March17th. Assembly will take place at the entrance to An Spórtlann. at 2.30p.m. The band will disband in Castle Street car park where children are to hand in their caps, capes and instruments belonging to the school. Many thanks to the school band co-ordinator; Mrs Ruttledge assisted by Mrs Cooney, Mr Tuohy Mr de Lacy and Ms Mairead Cafferkey. Many thanks also to Mrs Angela Gavin for arranging the uniforms.

We wish the band the very best of luck and hope that the weather is favourable on the day. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all !

The Linenhall Arts Centre:
The Linenhall Arts Centre’s Visual Art Programme for schools is collaborating with the borough of Waltham Forest in London in their plan to mount an exhibition of art works by children from every country in the world. The theme for the exhibition is “Inspired by Nature” Pupils from various classes will be taking part in a hands-on workshop. During this workshop children will be working together to create one large art-work. The art-work will remain at the Linenhall for transportation to London

Pioneer Quiz:
Congratulations to the A team who were the overall winners in the Pioneer Quiz in Davitt College on Friday night 29th Feb 2008. Congratulations also and many thanks to their coach Mrs. Angela Gavin. The team now go forward to the Regional Final on Sat April 5th

The team members were as follows:-
Team 1. Captain:Gareth Dunne, Katie Heston ,Jack Walshe, Ailís Moran.

Team 2. Captain:James Mulloy Matthew Moran ,Eleanor Thornton, Suzanne Murray.

Well done also to the B team who narrowly missed 2nd place. Congratulations to both teams for their high scores.

First Confession:
Well done to the pupils of second class on making their first Confession. Many thanks to their teacher Ms Rowley for preparing them so well.

“Green School”
The annual Taisce clean up will take place during April 2008. On behalf of the school community and the Parents Association we will be inviting you to join in on that evening. More details later. We thank in anticipation Mr. Shaughnessy, Ms. Cawley Mrs. Gavin and the “Green School” Committee for promoting the event within the school grounds.

Kids in Action Tokens:
We thank all those who have already sent in Kids In Action tokens to the school. The promotion will run until after Easter. If you still have some tokens at home please send them to us at your earliest convenience. Thanks to your co-operation .We obtained sports equipment for the school last year, which is now being used in the new sports hall. We are aiming for the same again this year with your help.

Tesco Computer Tokens:
This promotion started at the beginning of March and will run until the end of May. We thank all those who have already sent in tokens to the school. Thanks to your co-operation we obtained a laptop and software for the school last year. We are aiming for the same again this year with your help.

Swimming:
Third and fourth classes will commence their second swimming module on April 8 th. First and second classes will then have their second module starting in May.

Hurling:
Hurling lessons are continuing for classes from 1st to 6th. Many thanks to the wonderful work done by their coach Kevin Briscoe.

Buntús Training.
The staff participated in a very worthwhile soccer-training module on Monday, March 11th. This was facilitated by F.A.I. coach Mr. Paul Beirne. The school has been equipped with a soccer training kit. Sincere thanks to Mayo Sports Partnership.

School Mass:
The school mass will be held on Sunday next March 2nd 2008 at 10.a.m.The school choir will be singing for this mass. Many thanks to Nicola Reilly, Mrs.Anne Cooney, Miss Aisling Cawley, Michelle Rowley for all their work in preparing the choir. We would ask children to be in their places in the gallery at 9.45 a.m.

Quiz:
Good luck to both Quiz teams who are taking part in the Pioneer Quiz in Davitt college on tonight Feb 29 th Team members are ;Captain:Gareth Dunne, Katie Heston, Jack Walshe, Ailís Moran.Captain; James Mulloy, Matthew Moran, Eleanor Thornton, Suzanne Murray. Sports and Games:
Congratulations to the girls who participated in the Cuman na mBunscoil 7- a side competition recently in Ballyvary. The team beat Ballyvary in the semi-final but conceeded victory to Scoil Rafteirí in the final. Many thanks to Deirdre Ruttledge, Peter Tuohy and Kevin Briscoe for their work in the coaching and organisation of the Culaí team.Well done to Third and Fourth class who participated in the hurling blitz in Breaffy Sports Hotel Many thanks to their teachers Mrs. Cooney and Mr. De Lacy for acompanying them.

Mr Kevin Briscoe continues his coaching lessons in hurling and reports great progress at all levels.

Buntús Training Programme:
The staff will participate in a training module for the Búntus Multisport Partnership Programme on Mon. March 10th. Many thanks to the faclitators Charlie Lambert and Ann Fahey,Sports Trainers. Míle Buíochas do Comhpháirtíocht Spóirt Mhaigh Eo !

First Confession Ceremony
On Wednesday March 5th the children of Second Class will be receiving the sacrament of Penance at 8p.m. in the Church of the Holy Rosary.Many thanks to their teacher Ms. Rowley for all her work , to Fr. Pat for all his support and to all involved in the “ Do this in Memory programme

Confirmation Programme
Many thanks to all the parents who are involved in the “ Welcome the Spirit Programme”. The next meeting will take place on Mon. March 10 th.

Enrolment
Enrolment evenings for the Junior Infants of Sept 2008 will be held on Tues. 11th and Wed. 12th March from 2.30 to 4p.m.

Band:
The school bandhas begun practising for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The teachers of the Senior classes kindly request your co-operation in ensuring that the pupils practise their tunes. Many thanks to all involved for their help, support and co-operation.As outside practises have begun we request that children have coats and rain-wear to school every day.

Food Dudes
The school has been invited to participate in the Food Dude Healthy Eating programme.This pilot programme has been developed by the Food and Activity Research of the Dept of Agriculture and Food and Bord Bia.Its objective is to promote fruit and vegetables as being essential for good health.This is very much in keeping with our own healthy eating policy. More details later.

New Extension:
We are delighted that the teachers and pupils of Sen Inf, First and Fifth classes have moved into their new classrooms. The pupils are also enjoying P.E. activities in the new sports hall.Many thanks to architect Sean Mc Callion, the members of the design team, contractor P.J.Loughlin and foreman John Maree for a job well done .Thanks to all co-operation during the course of the project.

Linen Hall Art Centre:
Junior Infants participated in a art workshop on Mon & Tues Feb 25th and 26th . This interactive workshop explored the themes of Mayo Artist and Sculptor John Mc Hugh. The pupils created their own sculptures based on the ideas explored.

Congratulations
Congratulations to staff members Ann & Joe Murrihy on the birth of their daughter Helen ,to Emer & Fergal Dunne on the birth of their son Ronán and to Catherine & John Murray on the birth of their son Tom.

French Teacher
We are delighted to have had Madame Milhe with us over the past month .She was on placement here from Aix En Provence IUFM, Marseilles facilitated French to all classes from Infants to Sixth. The children are showed great enthusiasm for the French Language.Merci Beaucoup Delphine!

Aquatics
Swimming lessons continue to be held every Tuesday in Castlebar swimming pool. Fifth and Sixth class are attending at present and will be continuing for a further three weeks to complete their second module in aquatics.Third and Fourth classes will then begin their second module.

Sorcas Quircas:
Fifth class will be attending the Sorcas Quircos workshop in Castlebar Library on Friday March 7th. This is an interactive performance which promises lively audience participation.

Green Schools:
Many thanks to Eamonn Shaughnessy,the Green Committee and everyone for the continued support in implementing our Green Schools policies. A special thanks to Mr Michael Lavelle and all who are involved in the recycling rota,Thanks also to others who have volunteered to help out. Their turn will be coming up for taking the recyclable matter to the landfill.

Catherine Canny, Primary Curriculum Support Programme visited the school on Wed.Feb. 20th and ThursFeb 21st. Shefacilitated floor gymnastic lessons for Junior and Senior pupils which proved to be an enjoyable introduction to the new sport’s hall.

Super Valu Kids in Action Promotion
We are at present collecting tokens for the Super Valu Kids in Action Promotion.By collecting tokens and sending them in to school you can support the promotion whereby the school will be able to avail of free sports equipment.

Easter Holidays :

School will close on Friday March 14 th @ 12.30 p.m . Re-opens Monday March 31 st @ 9.20 a.m.

A very happy, healthy and prosperous new year to all.

Carol Service:
A sincere thank you to everyone who was involved Annual Carol service which was held on Wednesday December 19th in the church of the Holy Rosary Castlebar. Sincere and many thanks to Mrs. Anne Cooney and Ms. Aisling Cawley who prepared the choir. The Carols, readings, prayers and reflections created a prayerful Christmas atmosphere.

We would like to sincerely thank the Parents Association for organising a visit from Mr. Claus and treats on the morning of the Christmas holidays. The children really enjoyed his visit.

Annual Dinner Dance:
We would like to compliment the Snugboro School and Community Committee for organising and hosting the annual dinner dance on Friday 4 th January. We would like to sincerely thank all those people who supported the function by their attendance and to those who supported through sponsorship and donating spot-prizes. An envelope raffle was held on the night and proceeds from it together with profit from the function has realised €2,200 for school funds. Great credit is due to all who organized the dance and also to the Welcome Inn Hotel for their wonderful hospitality and their sponsorship of the main prize of a weekend away. Sincere thanks also to the Brose Walshe band for providing such lively entertainment. A thoroughly enjoyable night was had by all. On the night a presentation was made to former Chairperson Mr. Daniel Moran in recognition for his dedication and commitment to the school over in the term of three Boards of Management and for his involvement in fundraising over the years.

Linen hall Arts:
Second class will be visiting the Linenhall on Tues 5 th Feb to participate in a workshop exploring the themes and techniques of Mayo Artist and Sculptor John Mc Hugh. Junior Infants and 5 th class will be attending the workshop later in the month.

Road Safety:
Safety Officer, Gerry Butler facilitated presentations on road safety to all classes on Tues.12th &Wed. 13th. These were very interesting, worthwhile and relevant. We would ask parents/guardians to refrain from using the car park when accompanying children into the school. We have been advised by our health & safety officer that this practice presents a safety hazard. We rely on and would appreciate your co-operation in this regard. Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer Mayo Co. Co has furnished us with resources on promoting road safety.

New Extension:
The new extension is almost complete and in the near future Senior Infants, First Class and Fifth Class will be moving into their new classrooms. Acoustic panelling will shortly be fitted in the new sports hall and we are all looking forward to its completion. We greatly appreciate your co-operation and assure you that we are soon going to be furnished with a very fine building.

Modern Language Initiative:
We would like to extend a warm welcome to Mademoiselle Delphine Miah who is with us as part of our involvement with the Modern Languages for Primary School’s initiative. She is on placement from Aix-en-Provence IUFM – France. Bienvenue Mademoiselle Delphine !

Museum of Country Life:
Fifth Class attended Mummer’s Mask workshop in the Museum of Country Life on Wed, Dec 19th. Many thanks to their teacher Mrs Ruttledge for organising the trip.

Tokens:
Many thanks to all of you for supporting the Tesco Token collection. Which will provide sports equipment.

The school is also registered to become involved in the Super Value kids in Action voucher scheme. We will be accepting vouchers until April 2008. We would greatly appreciate your support with this initiative.

Enrolment:
With regard to enrolment for the school year 2006 – 2007, it would be important that any parent/legal guardian who has yet to inform the school of a sibling due to begin school in September 2008 would do so immediately. It is also advisable that parent/legal guardians would contact the school if they need to enter a child’s name on the pre-school register for the forthcoming years.

Green Schools:
Many thanks to all for your on-going co-operation with our green school policies and the transport of re-cyclable matter to Derrynumera. Anyone who would be willing to add their name to the rota may contact the school.

Swimming:
Swimming continues every Tuesday in Castlebar swimming pool. First and Second classes have just completed their lessons and 5th & 6 th classes begin their second module on Tues Feb. 5 th. Swimming is now an integral part of the P.E. curriculum.

Band:

Mobile Phones:
In line with policy the school does not allow a pupil to have/use a mobile or camera phone during school. Any child needing to communicate with parents/legal guardians will be facilitated in the office. Your co-operation in this matter will be greatly appreciated

Quiz:
Well done to the school quiz teams who took part in the recent Credit Union Quiz in Davitt College on Fri 25 th Jan. Many thanks to Mrs. Angela Gavin for organising Quiz practices and for training the teams.

Confirmation Retreat
The pupils of 6th class will be attending a confirmation retreat on Friday April 25th in Ballintubber Abbey. .

Cúlaí Competition :
Well done to the school’s girls and boys cúlaí teams both of which were narrowly beaten in the Cúlaí competition on Tues Jan 29th by Scoil Raftéirí in Breaffy. Well done to their trainers Mr. Tuohy & Mr. Briscoe.

School Closure:
On Friday November 30 th 2007 there will be a staff-planning afternoon. The school will close at 12.30p.m. on that day.

School Mass:

The school choir will be singing and the senior pupils from the school will be involved in the liturgy at 10a.m. Mass on Sunday next December 2 nd 2007 . Sixth Class pupils taking part in the Liturgy are to wear their school Uniforms. Pupils are requested to be in their places at the church by 9.45a.m on that morning.

Carol Service:
The school choir will be taking part in the Annual Carol Service in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar on Tuesday December 18 th.

Snugboro School & Community Dinner Dance:
Due to the outstanding success of last years dinner dance the committee are organising a further event for Friday 4 th January 2008. this will be held in the Welcome Inn Hotel and music on the night will be provided by the Brose Walshe Band. Tickets will be on sale shortly at €35. There will be an envelope raffle on the night in aid of the school funds. Any spot prizes donated would be most welcome!

Camogie:
Well done to the Senior Girls Camogie team who reached the final in the Cumann na Bunscoil mini sevens Camogie in Ballyvary on Thursday November 15th 2007.

The Team members were: - Ivana Conner, Elenor Thornton, Grainne Gavin, Ailís Moran, Hannah Sweeney, Deirdre Hopkins, Laura Burke, Emily Breslin, Eilís Hardesty, Eva Kimpwene, Michaella Reilly, Aisling Cooney.

A note of Congratulations and sincere thanks to Peter Tuohy and Kevin Briscoe who coached the team.

I.N.T.O.- G.A.A Mini Sevens:
Belated Congratulations to Sarah Prendergast and Grainné Gavin who were selected and played at National level at Croke Park on 12 th August 2007 and 2 nd September 2007, during the All Ireland Hurling Semi-final and Final interval games.

Swimming:
The pupils of 3rd and 4th Classes are attending for swimming lessons at present. 1st and 2nd classes will begin their modules on Tuesday December 11th 2007.

Tesco:
Thank you all for your co-operation with the Tesco Sports Token collection. We will be receiving tokens until mid December. Computer Collection: The school has been furnished with software packages from last year’s collection of computer tokens. These software packages are a welcome addition and update to our software library.

Progress On New Extension:
The building programme on the new extension is nearing completion. Preparation for ground-works on the school & play areas is taking place at the moment. Arrangements have been put in place for the replacement of the existing windows in the original classrooms. This will add to the heat efficiency and insulation of the school. Sincere thanks to you all for your support and co-operation.

We wish to extend a warm welcome back to all for the 2007 – 2008 school year. We hope that you all had a very enjoyable summer. We extend a warm welcome to our Junior Infants children as they begin primary school. Every good wish to last years 6th class who are commencing post-primary education this Autumn. We wish them every success and happiness in the years that lie ahead. We would also like to congratulate our past pupils on their recent Leaving and Junior Cert results and we wish them every success in the future.

Retirements :
We would like to thank everyone who helped to make June 22nd 2007 such a fitting and memorable tribute for Mr. Pat Ruttledge who retired last year. Thank you to the Board of management, the Parents Association, the teachers and pupils. A special thank you to all the past pupils who returned for the big occasion.

Swimming:
Swimming lessons have begun for 5 th & 6 th class pupils from 11p.m. – 12 p.m. on Tuesdays in Castlebar swimming pool The all-in cost of the bus and pool –hire is €25 . Each module will last for six weeks.

Congratulations:
We extend our warmest congratulations to Mr Micéal and Mrs Reíltín Shaw on the birth of their daughter Ellen and to Ms Aisling Cawley and Mr Stephen McDonnell on their recent engagement.

Personal Insurance:
We are enclosing the forms for personal insurance of the pupils for the coming year 2007/2008. The cover costs €5 for school and school related activities only. It costs €8 for 24-hour cover. If you do decide to avail of the personal insurance please return the form and the premium to the class-teacher before Wednesday 3 rd /October/2007

Thank You:
Thank You to all who have paid the supplementary expenses as was denoted at the bottom of the book lists. Also to remind anybody who has yet to pay.

School Calendar: A copy of the school calendar for the coming academic year 2007/2008 has been circulated. Please keep it safely for future reference.

Cross Country: Congratulations to the girls cross country team who qualified on Friday 21 st in Westport for the County Final to be held in Belleek Castle, Ballina on Friday 28 th September 2007. The team members are – Kathryn Lavelle, Eleanor Thornton, Graínne Gavin, Alannah Murray, Ivana Connor and Laura Burke. Well done to all who participated on the day.

New Extension:
We wish to thank everybody for their co-operation with regard to the access arrangements and accommodation at the present time.

The present school was re-wired and re-painted over the summer and the original G.P. hall has been renovated into a library (presently used by 5 th class), a general-purpose room and computer room.

The sports hall and three new classrooms are nearing completion and work is progressing on the front entrance area, staff room and admin area. We look forward to your on-going co-operation and support. Renewed thanks to all.

Parking Area:
Thank you all with regard to the parking arrangements. With the inclusion of a staff car park in the school grounds there is extra parking space outside the school. We ask that the car park is not used as a set down area, for safety reasons. We would also appreciate if the Bus parking area is kept clear at all times, again for safety reasons. We request and appreciate your ongoing co-operation with these arrangements.

First Holy Communion Meeting:
The first meeting for this year’s “Do this in Memory Programme” takes place in St. Patrick’s B.N.S. on Monday October 1 st at 9.00p.m. All parents/Legal Guardians of the First Communion class are invited to attend.

Tesco Tokens:
The school is once again participating in the Tesco Sports for Schools Scheme. The scheme is running until mid November 2007. We benefited greatly from this scheme last year and look forward to your co-operation again this year in the collection of tokens.

School Web Site:Due to the construction work the school is not at present connected for Internet access. We apologise for any inconvenience and will inform you as soon as we are up and running on the www again.

Parents Association:
Any Parents/Legal Guardians wishing to get involved in the Parents Association may return the volunteer slip tomorrow.

Great credit is due to both he and the pupils for the beautiful art work which adorned the church on the day. Thanks is also due to Ms Cawley Mrs Cooney and Sr. Margo for training and conducting the choir. A word of appreciation to Mrs Catherine Reilly (school secretary) for the wonderful booklet which she prepared with the children, everyone was impressed by same. Thank you for ensuring that your child(ren) was/were present in good time on the day for the choir and the ceremony. They did us proud. May the Holy Spirit remain with the pupils and guide the throughout their lives.

Sports Day;
A very successful sports day was held on Wednesday 30 th June 2008. We also acknowledge with gratitude the generous sponsorship of the parents association towards the cost of running sports day. The prizes will be presented before the end of June. Thanks to all the parents who took time off to give their support to the children. Their presence lent atmosphere to the occasion.

School Tours:
On Thursday 8 th June 2006 first and second classes with their teachers Mrs Ruttledge, Mrs Murrihy & Ms O’Grady visited the seashore at Old Head Louisbough. It was a very educational experience for all involved.

On Fri. June 15th Junior & Senior Infants together with Ms Cawley and Ms Rowley had a very enjoyable trip to Westport House.

On Monday 10 th June 2007 the pupils from 5th th class visited the Linenhall Arts Centre to meet author Darren Shan. This was followed by a tour of Castlebar Library. There they viewed microfilm of local history. Local history now forms a module of the history curriculum.

On Tuesday, June 27th the pupils of 3rd & 4th classes will visit Atlantic Adventure centre. Many interesting activities are planned for what promises to be a fun-filled day. An annual trip to an adventure centre is one of the recommendations now contained in the revised P.E. Curriculum.

Art:
A Sculptor Artist Sally McKenna visited the school yesterday and facilitated a very interesting workshop for the pupils of 6 th class.

Tesco Tokens – We thank all those who have sent in the Tesco tokens to the school. We hope to get another laptop computer for the school with the tokens collected.

Games:
The boys football team had victories over Claremorris & Ballinrobe in recent matches. They were narrowly defeated by Westport.

Congratulations to the Girls Camogie team who represented Mayo in Athenry on May. They beat Sligo but conceded victory to Galway on Saturday. Well done on reaching the final of the Camogie blitz yesterday. They were narrowly beaten by one point in the final by Tooreen.

Hurling :
We wish to sincerely thank Mr. Ger Whyte on all the wonderful work he has done to foster the skill of Hurling & Camogie here in Snugboro . He has instilled in the pupils an enthusiasm and interest in the sport and he has developed the skills of the children to an excellent standard and brought them to a level we could only dream of.

Food Allergy: Please see attached letter regarding the enrolment in September. This child has a very serious nut allergy. Your support and co-operation in this matter will be very much appreciated.

Parents Association
Well done to the Parents Association who raised over €5,500 in a very successful fundraising drive. They wish to extend their gratitude to all who supported them.

Book Fair: The annual book fair organised by the Parents Association will be held on Thursday 28 th June 2007 at 8p.m. in Snugboro Community Centre.

New Extension:
The Sports Hall, three classrooms and corridor area of the new extension is currently undergoing mechanical and engineering work. Work will shortly begin of renovating the present hall and inner courtyard. The renovation of the staff/office and admin area will commence when the school closes for the summer vacation. To facilitate the construction work on the inner courtyard the Junior & Senior Infants will get their summer holidays on Monday, June 25th th at 2p.m. The B.O.M. apologies for any inconvenience caused.

First Holy Communion:
We wish to congratulate the pupils in second class who made their first Holy Communion on Sunday 6 th May 2007. Many thanks to their class teacher Mrs. Deirdre Ruttledge for her wonderful work in preparing them so well for their big day. Thanks are also due to Mrs Gavin and Mrs Cooney for training the choir and & Sr. Margo Lombard for accompanying the choir on the day. A sincere word of appreciation to Mrs. Catherine Reilly for the beautiful booklet, which she prepared with the new Communicants.

Secret Garden Workshop:
The Junior classes have participated in a workshop in the Linenhall Arts Centre entitled Amazing Secret Garden. Classes 2nd and 4th will be visiting the workshop on May 24th 2007.

Confirmation:
The 6th class pupils completed their retreat in preparation for Confirmation. The retreat was held in Ballintubber Abbey on May 3 rd.Mr. Tuohy is busy preparing the class for the sacrament
The Confirmation ceremony for 6th class will take place on Saturday 26 th June 2007 @ 2.00pm. We wish them, their parents and their class teacher the blessings of the Holy Spirit as they prepare for this important day. It would be appreciated if any child yet to bring in their baptismal cert would do so.

All Ireland Past Pupils Sporting Achievement:
The school is delighted to congratulate St. Joseph’s Secondary school Football Team on their All Ireland win against Waterford recently. Well done to Girl’s Aloud and special congratulation to past pupils, Caoimhe Dempsey, Agnes Hoban, Aoife Healy, Marie Keane, Caroline Ormbsy and Shona Conway.

Sports Day:
The sports for all day will be held on Wednesday May 23rd 2007 (weather permitting). As always the emphasis is on participation not on winning. We will give you advance notice of the day. Gaelic Football:
The Snugboro Girl’s Football Team defeated St. Angela’s in the opening round and conceeded victory to Breaffy by a narrow margin of 3 points in the 9-a side competition last week .

An Taísce Green Flag Award Ceremony.
The Green School Committee under the stewardship of Mrs Murrihy will be hosting the Flag raising ceremony on Thursday 14 th June 2007 . Great credit is due to Anna & the G.S.C. for the hard work & commitment to caring for our school environment. We would also like to acknowledge & congratulate the wonderful work done by Mrs Emer Dunne in the lead up to the assessment which resulted in the awarding of the 3 rd Green Flag for the school. The school band acquitted themselves excellently at the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Participating in the parade was the culmination of months of hard work and practice. An Taisce Annual Spring Clean Up
The annual Taisce clean up will take place on Monday 23 rd April 2007 at 7.00p.m . The Parents Association has very kindly agreed to co-ordinate the event. Androcles and the Lion:
A wonderful theatrical experience was had by the pupils when the Spring Onion Puppet Theatre visited the school last week. John Wilson puppeteer facilitated a puppet workshop after the performances. Many thanks to Ms. Rowley for organising and facilitating the event.

First Confession:
Well done to the pupils of second class on making their first Confession. Many thanks to their teacher Mrs Ruttledge for preparing them so well.

Swimming:
Third and fourth class have commenced their second swimming module. This will continue until 15 th May. First and second class will then have their second module starting on May 22 nd.

Hurling:
Hurling lessons are continuing for classes. Many thanks to the wonderful work done by their coach Ger Whyte.

Pioneer Quiz:
Two teams took part in the Pioneer Quiz in Davitt College on Friday night 23 rd March 2007.
The team members were as follows:-
Team 1. Eoin Condon, Aisling Conlon, James Molloy, Nicholina Mylett.

Team 2. Niall Kerrigan, Grace O’Sullivan, Katie Heston, Áilís Moran.
Team one tied for second place with Parke N.S., but were beaten in the tiebreaker. They finished in 3 rd place. Team 2 were placed 4 th. Congratulations to all the children for their high scores. Thanks to Mrs Murray, Ms McCafferkey and Mrs Angela Gavin. Thanks also to Noreen Heston who accompanied the teams on the night.

Drama:
“Setanta” was presented by the Clan Cluana Theatre on March 5th. A most enjoyable performance was enjoyed by all. John Wilson and the Spring Onion Puppet Theatre will visit the school on Wednesday March 21st. The cost per pupil is €1.50

The Tesco token promotion is under way, this will be running until May 14th 2007. We would appreciate if you and family members could collect for the school. Last year the school was fortunate to qualify for a laptop computer with tokens collected.

Museum of Country life
First Class participated in a very enjoyable workshop on February 8th held in the Museum of Country Life, Turlough. They enjoyed the experience of traditional toys and games. Thank you to their teachers Ms O’Grady and Mrs. Murrihy for organising this excursion and for accompanying the classes.

K-nex Engineering Challenge
Fourth class will be participating in the k-nex Engineering and Science challenge on Tuesday March 20th 2007. Best of luck to all.

Mr Ger White continues his coaching lessons in Hurling and reports great progress at all levels.

School Medical
The school medical for 2 nd and 6 th class will take place on Monday next Feb. 19 th. The school medical for Senior infants will take place on Mon.Feb.26th

Aquatics
Swimming lessons continue to be held every Tuesday in Castlebar swimming pool. Fifth and Sixth class are attending at present and will be continuing for a further five weeks to complete their second module in aquatics.

Buntús Training Programme:
The staff participated in a very worthwhile training module for the Búntus Multisport Partnership Programme on Feb.7 th As a result of our acceptance onto the programme the school has received two bags of Multisport equipment valued at €800.These include hurleys,hockey and croquet sticks and a variety of sports equipment. Band:
The school bandhas begun practising for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The teachers of the Senior classes kindly request your co-operation in ensuring that the pupils practise their tunes. Music
The children of Senior Infants and Fourth Class participated in Music Woskshops facilitated by Mr.Redmond Connolly on Wednesday Feb.14 th .It was a worthwhile and hugely enjoyable experience .

Museum of Country Life
The children of First Class enjoyed a wonderful trip to a Toys and Games workshop in the Museum of Country Life, Turlough on Thurs. Feb.8 th.There they had the experience of playing traditional games and also of looking at and examining old fashioned ,traditional toys.

New Extension:
We are very pleased that the new extension is well on schedule . Architect Sean Mc Callion and contractor P.J.Loughlin report great progress. The block-laying for the construction has just begun.Many thanks for your on-going co-operation with the project.

French Teacher
We are delighted to have Madame Dautréme with us .She is on placement here from Aix En Provence IUFM, Marseilles and is teaching French to all classes from Infants to Sixth. The children are showing great enthusiasm for the French Language.Merci Beaucoup Marléne.

On Thursday March 22 nd the teachers will be attending inservice.The school will be closed on that day.

Quiz:
The two Senior Quiz teams are at present practising for the Pioneer quiz which will be held in March. Many thanks to their coaches Mrs Angela Gavin and Ms Catherine McHale.

Green Schools:
Many thanks to Mrs Ann Murrihy,Emer Carey and everyone for continued support in implementing our Green Schools policies. First Confession Ceremony
On Thursday March 15 th the children of Second Class will be receiving the sacrament of Penance at 8p.m. in the Church of the Holy Rosary.

Fire Station Presentation Workshop
Mr. Conor Smyth, Fire Officer Castlebar Fire Sation will give a presentation to 3 rd class on fire safety in the coming weeks.

Fitness and Exercise
A member of the physiotherapy department H.S.E. will come to speak with the Senior Classes on Health and fitness on Wednesday ,March 7 th.

Super Valu Kids in Action Promotion
We are at present collecting tokens for the Super Valu Kids in Action Promotion.By collecting tokens and sending them in to school you can support the promotion whereby the school will be able to avail of free sports equipment.

Theatre Workshops
On Monday March 5 th the Clan Cluana Theatre Company will visit the school and will staging a production of Setanta.

On Wednesday March 21 st the Spring Onion Puppet Theatre will perform their production of Androcles and the Lion. More details on these performanceslater.

We are delighted and fortunate that the school has been selected to participate in the Buntús Play and Multisport programme for Primary schools.

On Wednesday 7 th February 2007 the staff of the school will be attending (a training) in-service in conjunction with the Buntús Programme for Primary schools. To facilitate this training session it will be necessary that classes finish at 11.45a.m. on that day We would appreciate your co-operation with these arrangements. The buses will collect the children at that time.

Quiz:
On Friday January 26th 2007 the school Quiz teams participated in the Annual Credit Union Quiz. Many thanks to their coaches Mrs Angela Gavin and Mrs Catherine Murray. The junior team achieved second place: Team members: - Ross Chambers, Michael Lally, Emily Breslin and Matthew Moran (captain).

An Táisce: Green School (Third Flag) Award:
We have great pleasure in announcing that our Green School has been successful in its application for the awarding of our third Green Flag Award.

Congratulations to our Green School’s Committee and to their co-ordinators Mrs. Emer Dunne and Mrs. Angela Gavin. An Táisce stated in their letter to us that they were extremely impressed with our programme and “has no hesitation in making their decision.”

Water Week:
We wish to congratulate Mrs Emer Dunne for co-coordinating and facilitating water week, which was held in December. A lively, educational and (fun–filled) week was enjoyed by all. This project also included an interesting presentation given by Orla Kennedy E.P.A.

The Green school committee visited the water – treatment plant in Tourmakeady. Many thanks to Mr. Gerry Shally who facilitated the group and gave them a very interesting tour of the plant. Well done also Emer on the production of the Green Newsletter which was featured on the Pat Kenny radio show on December 28 th and well done to Mrs. Angela Gavin who was interviewed on the Derek Mooney show in connection with our Green School. Many thanks to Emer, Angela and committee for their Trojan work. Renewed Congratulations to all involved.

M.L.P.S.I.:
As part of our long-standing and worthwhile involvement with the modern language initiative the school will be hosting a Stagiere from Marseilles. We are pleased to welcome Marlène who will be on placement here in Snugboro from 5th February until March 2 nd. Bien venue Marlène

The retirement function for Michael Cunningham was a wonderful occasion and a great tribute to the Snugboro Community who turned out in such numbers for the function. Many thanks to the Welcome Inn Hotel for their outstanding service and hospitality on the night. It was a night of appreciation and was an occasion to be remembered for years to come.

A sincere thank you to everyone who was involved in our pre-Christmas celebrations. The Annual Carol service was held on Wednesday December 22 nd for all the pupils. The Carols, readings, prayers and reflections created a prayerful Christmas atmosphere. Many thanks to Mr Tuohy for preparing the “Jesse Tree” with 6 th class. Thank you to Mrs Cooney and 3 rd class for “This is the moment” and to Mrs Murray for “Come to the Manger with 4 th class. “The Bright Star” was presented by 5 th class, thank you to Ms. Ní Cheafaircaigh. A sincere thanks to Mrs Gavin for her work with the choir, Nicola Reilly for her accompaniment & guitar group, Ms O’Grady for her instrumental group and all the angels and shepherds who attended. (We were delighted that they featured on the Castlebar website) A Special Thank you to Fr. Pat Burke (school chaplain) who led the prayers and readings and also blessed the foundations for the new extension. Soil from the Holy Land was also put into the foundations which were poured that day.

We would like to sincerely thank the Parents Association for organising a visit from Mr. Claus and treats on the morning of the Christmas holidays. The children really enjoyed his visit.

Dinner Dance:
On behalf of the school community we would like to compliment the Snugboro Retirement Committee for organising and hosting the dinner dance on Saturday 6 th January in honour of Mr. Michael Cunningham. It was a marvellous success and a wonderful tribute to both Mr. Michael Cunningham and also to the Community of Snugboro. Congratulations and well done to Committee members Anthony Healy, Orla Hughes, Ann Halpin, Phyl Durkan, Delores Durkan, Catherine McHale, Anne Deere, Martina Hughes, Ger Deere, Mary Gallagher, Bridie Lally and Elaine Durkan. Thank you also Catherine Reilly for assisting the committee. Thanks also to the Welcome Inn for all their help in making the night so enjoyable. A great night was had by all.

Tokens:
Many thanks to all of you for supporting the Tesco Token collection. We look forward to availing of some Sports equipment with these tokens.

The school is also registered to become involved in the Super Value kids in Action voucher scheme. We will be accepting vouchers until April 2007. We would greatly appreciate your support with this initiative.

Modern Language:
As part of our involvement with the Modern Language for Primary School initiative we look forward to a visit from Ms Marlène Dautreme from Aix-en-Provence IUFM – France. She will be on placement with us from February 5 th 2007 for 3 weeks. Bienvenue Mademoiselle Dautreme.

Enrolment:
With regard to enrolment for the school year 2006 – 2007, it would be important that any parent/legal guardian who has yet to inform the school of a sibling due to begin school in September 2007 would do so immediately. It is also advisable that parent/legal guardians would contact the school if they need to enter a child’s name on the pre-school register for the forthcoming years.

Green Schools:
Tomorrow Orla Kennedy from the Environmental Protection Agency will visit the school. This is in connection with our “Green School Project”. She will facilitate a Power Point presentation on aspects of water and will include features such as conservation, pollution, local rivers, lakes etc.

Swimming:
Swimming lessons continue to be held every Tuesday in Castlebar swimming pool. First and Second classes have two more weeks and then 6 th and 5 th classes will begin their module. Swimming is now an integral part of the P.E. curriculum.

Band:
The school bandwill shortly begin full practices for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Mobile Phones:
In line with policy the school does not allow a pupil to have/use a mobile or camera phone during school. Any child needing to communicate with parents/legal guardians will be facilitated in the office. Your co-operation in this matter will be greatly appreciated

Quiz:
The school quiz team will shortly begin practising for the forthcoming Credit Union and Pioneer quizzes to be held in Davitt College. The children involved will be notified of practice times.

On Wednesday 20 th December at 11.15a.m. The annual Carol Service will be held in the School Hall for all the pupils.

Retirement:
On Saturday 6 th January there will be a retirement dinner dance in honour of Mr. Michael Cunningham former Principal. This will be held in the Welcome Inn Hotel. Music will be provided by the Brose Walshe band.

Water week:
Last week all classes in the school participated in “Water Week” Everyone was reminded of how important it is to conserve water and undertook activities such as art activities, science experiments, stories & poems to do with water. A newsletter was also sent out to each family in the school & to local radio stations to send out the message of the importance of water in our lives.

Drama:
The Midland Theatre Group staged a very enjoyable and lively performance of Jack and the Beanstalk. It was thoroughly enjoyed by the pupils.

The pupils of 6th class participated in an interesting and stimulating project during “Hands On” Science week in Davitt College.

The pupils of 5th & 6th classes attended a production of Calamity Jane staged by the T.Y. students of St. Joseph’s Sec. School. Well done to those students several of whom are past pupils of the school.

Linenhall:
The pupils of 4th and 5th classes participated in the Clive Bright exhibition “Sanctum” This involved a tour of the gallery followed by a work shop.

Sports:
The school has been accepted on to the Buntús n Sports Partnership Programme for 2007. More of this in the New Year.

Bereavement:
We extend our sympathies to the Redmond family on the death of their grandmother Mrs Bridget Redmond. Sympathy also to Mrs Helen Monaghan on the death of her uncle Dinny Monaghan Headford. Sincere sympathy to Mrs. Celia Webb, the Deere family and Mrs Murrihy on the untimely passing of Christy Webb. May they Rest in Peace, and may the Christ Jesus comfort their families at this time.

Camogie:
We wish to congratulate the Senior Girls Camogie team who beat Scoil Rafteírí in the Cummann na Bunscoil mini sevens Camogie final in Ballyvary on Thursday November 9 th 2006

Welcome:

Linenhall Arts Centre:

The Midland Theatre Company:
The Midland Theatre Company will visit the school on Monday 27 th November 2007 to perform this year’s production of “Jack and the Beanstalk”

Hands on – Science Magic:
Sixth class have participated in the Science Week Hands on Workshop in Davitt College. This proved to be very interesting and enjoyable.

Swimming:
The pupils of 3rd and 4th Classes are attending for swimming lessons at present. 1st and 2nd classes will begin their modules on Tuesday November 28th 2006.

Tesco:
Thank you all for your co-operation with the Tesco Sports Token collection. We will be receiving tokens until mid December. Computer Collection: The school has been furnished with a laptop computer and three software packages from last year’s collection of computer tokens.
New Extension:
We wish to inform you that work on the new extension has begun. We wish to thank you and look forward to your continued co-operation with the new arrangements. We wish the best of luck to Pat Loughlin contractor and John Marree site manager and all involved in the project.

Parents Committee:
A new parents Association has been elected for the school year 2006/2007. Please refer to the minutes of the A.G.M. which were circulated to each family earlier this week. Cross Country:
Congratulations to the four cross country teams who won three first places and one-second place in the cross-country competitions. We wish them the very best of luck in the County Final in Ballina today.

Tesco Tokens:
The school is participating in the Tesco Sports for Schools Scheme. The scheme is running until 5 th November 2006. we have benefited greatly from this scheme last year and look forward to your co-operation again this year in the collection of tokens.

Fundraising:
We wish to thank everybody who contributed so generously to the Matilda project, which was held on Mayo Day. €458 was raised which will go towards providing breakfasts to children in Zimbabwe.

Adi Roche visits the school:
Tomorrow Friday September 29th we will be honoured to have a visit from Adi Roche founder of the Chernobyl Children’s Project. Adi will be here in the school from 10a.m. to 11a.m. and the children and staff look forward eagerly to her visit.

Bereavement:
It is with great sadness and regret that we have heard of the death of Mrs Teresa Conway Ballinagloch. Teresa and her late husband Eddie were parents in this school community for many years and were always known and respected for their support, and co-operation in all school activities. Teresa and Eddie took great pride in their children’s interests and achievements and our hearts go out to them at this time of great sadness in their lives. We shall soon be issuing the forms for personal insurance of the pupils for the coming year 2006/2007. The cover costs €5 for school and school related activities only. It costs €8 for 24-hour cover. Swimming:
Swimming lessons have begun 5 th & 6 th class pupils from 11p.m. – 12 p.m. on Tuesdays in Castlebar swimming pool The all-in cost of the bus and pool –hire is €22 . Each module will last for six weeks.

Confirmation:
We wish to congratulate the pupils in sixth class who made their Confirmation. We wish to thank their class teacher Mr Eamonn Shaughnessy for the wonderful work which he did in preparing the pupils for the big day. Thanks is also due to Mrs Gavin and Sr. Margo for training and conducting the choir. A word of appreciation to Mrs Catherine Reilly (school secretary) for the wonderful booklet which she prepared with the children, everyone was impressed by same. Thank you for ensuring that your child(ren) was/were present in good time on the day for the choir and the ceremony. They did us proud. May the Holy Spirit remain with the pupils and guide them throughout their lives.

School Tours:
On Tuesday the 6th June 2006 the pupils from 3rd class with their teacher Mrs Anne Cooney visited the Céide Fields in North Mayo. The trip was most informative and interesting. The pupils already had some background knowledge of the subject as it had been featured in their History text books. They were taken on a guided tour of the area and they had an opportunity to ask questions. They also took some stunning photographs using the digital camera. We hope to upload these to the website in the next few days.

On Thursday 8th June 2006 the pupils from first and second classes with their teachers Mrs Ruttledge, Mrs Murrihy & Ms O’Grady visited the seashore at Old Head Louisbough. They observed interesting samples of shells and plants and took some interesting photographs of sea – birds & sea–weeds. It was a very educational experience for all involved.

On Monday (12th June 2006) the pupils from 5th & 6th classes went on a Historical walking tour of Castlebar under the guidance of local historian Mr. Brian Hoban. Local history now forms a module of the history curriculum.

On Thursday next the pupils of 3rd & 4th classes will visit Clew Bay adventure Centre. Many interesting activities are planned for what promises to be a fun-filled day. An annual trip to an adventure centre is one of the recommendations now contained in the revised P.E. Curriculum.

Sports Day;
A very successful sports day was held in excellent sunshine on Friday 9th June 2006. We wish to thank Anthony Gainley for cutting the grass in the sports field. We also acknowledge with gratitude the generous sponsorship of the parents association towards the cost of running sports day. The prizes will be presented before the end of June. Thanks to all the parents who took time off to give their support to the children. Their presence lent atmosphere to the occasion.

Games:
The girls football team had victories over Westport & Ballinrobe on the way to the County quarter finals which were held in Ballintubber. They were narrowly defeated by Kiltimach. Two points was the margin between the sides in the end. Kiltimagh will go on to play Ballina in the county final.

The girls camogie team played on Thursday in the mini seven competition in Ballyvary. Our girls beat Scoil Raifteirí and Ballyvary on their way to the County final against Tooreen. Unfortunately they were defeated by 3 goals to 1-2 in a very thrilling, keenly contested game. Our star injured player Shauna Maloney was sorely missed from both girls teams. We wish her a speedy recovery to full fitness.

New Extension:
On Tuesday last 6th June 2006 tender documents were issued to a number of interested builders. These must be completed and returned to the Architects by the end of June. The tender documents will then be submitted to the DES for further scrutiny and hence the awarding of the contract.

Changes to the School Calendar:
We have three school based in-service days to take before the end of this academic year (30th June 2006). In order to cause the least amount of disruption to an already disjointed term we have decided to take those days at the end of the term. The new arrangements are as follows: -
Monday 26th June 2006 Junior infants will finish for the school year

Tuesday 27th June 2006 Induction half day for next year’s Junior Infants Time: 9.30a.m. – 12.00 noon

Wednesday 28th June 2006 The school will close at 12.30p.m. for all pupils for the annual Summer Holidays.

1.00p.m. – 3.00p.m. Inservice planning for teachers.

Please note these changes. We hope that they will not inconvenience anybody too much. We shall remind you of those changes again towards the end of June.

Computers:

  • Sixth class are in the process of making a DVD explaining the rules of rounders. It is part of the FÍS Project (Film in schools). When finished, the film will be approx 5mins long and hopefully a useful learning resource for teachers and pupils alike nation wide.

Confirmation:
The 6th class pupils have completed their retreat in preparation for Confirmation. The retreat was held in Ballintubber Abbey last week. Mr Shaughnessy is busy preparing the class for Confirmation Day on Sunday4th June 2005 @ 2.00pm.

Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (CBOI)
The Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland invited our choir to participate in their concert in the T.F. Royal Theatre Castlebar on Saturday night 6 th May 2006. Mrs Angela Gavin & Mrs Anne Cooney set to work immediately preparing the choir for the big event. There were rehearsals in the school and in the T.F. On Saturday 6 th May the rehearsals went on all day long in the T.F. We wish to thank the parents, the teachers and the pupils for giving up their Saturday to be there. They all acquitted themselves so well on the night and won rapturous applause from the very appreciative audience. It is an experience which they will never forget. It will stand them in good stead for confidence building and boosting their self-esteem. Well done Mrs. Gavin & Mrs Cooney & all members of the choir. We felt privileged to be the only co-educational school in the parish to be invited to participate.

Sports Day;
The sports for all day will be held at a date to be arranged in mid June(weather permitting). As always the emphasis is on participation not on winning. We will give you advance notice of the day. You are welcome to come along and enjoy the fun if you have time .We wish to thank the parents association for very kindly giving us sponsorship for the occasion.

Soccer Blitz :
The Snugboro A Girl’s defeated Foxford in the opening round and went on to hold the Connaught Champions (Bohola) to a 0-0 draw (Bohola went through on Goal difference). Snugboro B girls were unlucky in their opening games going 1-0 down in both.

Snugboro A Boys defeated their opponents in the opening round. They were defeated by Foxford in the semi-final Boys B team were knocked out in the 1 st round.

Gaeliic Football :
Snugboro girls team won their match against Westport despite being without their two best player Shauna Maloney and Sarah Prendergast. They will play Ballinrobe in the next round of the championship. Snugboro boys were narrowly beaten by Westport boys in the first round. They have yet to play Ballinrobe and Claremorris boys. We wish them better luck in those upcoming games.

New Extension:
As you may have heard in the media the DES has advertised for letters of interest from contractors. Those letters are now being processed. Tender documents. will issue to contractors at the end of May. The award of tender should be made at the end of June.All going well work should commence before the end of the summer holidays. We are continuing to impress on the DES the importance of such an extension for the needs of the pupils.

School Band:
Assembly for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be at 1.45.p.m . at An Sportlann – by the car park in front of C.T. Electric. We wish everybody involved every good luck and good weather for the day. Children may be picked up when the band disbands at Castle Street car park. We wish to thank all those parents who have volunteered to help with the band uniform and instruments.

Drama:
Two very enjoyable performances were held in the school over the past month. “Young Fionn MacCumhal & the Salmon of Knowledge” and” ”Moving House” presented by “The Spring Onion Puppet Theatre

Sports:

Modern Language:
At present we are delighted to have French Student Monsieur Pierre Brice with us. Mons Brice is a student teacher in the L’Institute Universitaine D’Aix-Marseille – France and is currently on placement here. We would like to sincerely thank Pierre for all the French which he has taught to the children over the past few weeks and for his co-operation with the “Spring Onion Theatre Company”

Credit Union Quiz:
Well done to the members of the Quiz team, which took part in the Pioneer Quiz, held in Davitt College on Friday 10 th March. They achieved third place overall. Many thanks to their coaches Angela Gavin and Catherine McHale.

First Confession:
The First Confessions ceremony will take place in the Church of the Holy Rosary at Thursday 23 rd March 2006 at 8.p.m. Many thanks to Ms Deirdre Ruttledge and Mrs Ann Murrihy for preparing the children with their prayers and readings.

Tokens:
Many thanks to all who have sent in “Kids in Action” Super Value Tokens these will be issued until April 6 th. We will be continuing to receive them until March 22 nd. We hope to get some sports equipment in exchange for these.
The Tesco token promotion is under way, this will be running until May 14 th 2006. We would appreciate if you and family members could collect for the school. Last year the school was fortunate to qualify for a laptop computer with tokens collected.

Museum of Country life
First Class participated in a very enjoyable workshop on February 28 th held in the Museum of Country Life, Turlough. They enjoyed the experience of traditional toys and games. Thank you to Ms O’Grady for organising this.

Trip to Croach Patrick

K-nex Engineering Challenge
Well done to fourth class under the direction of Ms McHale who participated in the k-nex Engineering and Science challenge. Many thanks to Paul Gallagher, B eng and Dermot Brady B. eng who facilitated the challenge. Congratulations to the winners on the day. The winning entry now goes forward to the Regional Finals.
School Extension:

School Mass:
The Confirmation class participated in a Ceremony of Light on Sunday 26th January 2006. The school choir sang for this Mass accompanied by Ms Nicola Reilly. Many thanks to Nicola and Mrs Angela Gavin for all their work. Thank you to Ms Reíltin O’Grady for her help with the instrumentals. Many thanks to Mr Shaughnessy and those parents who helped in the preparations

Sports and Games:
Mr Ger White continues his coaching lessons in Hurling. He reports great progress in his work.

There will be a Hurling Blitz for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd classes on Thursday 9th February 2006 in Scoil Rafteírí. It would be appreciated if those children involved could have extra gear with them.

The lunchtime soccer league is continuing. Many thanks to Mrs Ruttledge and all those teachers who encourage the children to participate in this activity.

Swimming lessons continue to be held every Tuesday in Castlebar swimming pool. First and Second class are just coming to the end of their first module and will be continuing for a further Four weeks to complete their second module in aquatics.

Band:
The school band has begun practicing for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The teachers of the Senior classes kindly request your co-operation in ensuring that the pupils practise their tunes. Many thanks to all involved for their help, support and co-operation.

Quiz:
Well done to the school quiz teams who achieved 59 points out of a total of 66 for the Seniors and 48 out of 54 for the Juniors in the Credit Union Quiz on Friday 3rd February 2006. They are at present practising for the Pioneer quiz. Many thanks to their coaches Mrs Angela Gavin and Ms Catherine McHale.

Art Workshops:
Second and Fourth class participated in Linenhall Art Workshops exploring the theme of Architecture. These proved to be very enjoyable.

Sixth class attended Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat performed by St. Gerald’s Secondary School in the Royal Theatre Castlebar. Congratulations to all students and teachers involved.

Green Schools:
Many thanks to Mrs Ann Murrihy and everyone for continued support in implementing our Green Schools policies. A special thanks to Mr Michael Lavelle, Mr John Gallagher, Mr John Lally, Mr Aidan Maughan, Mr Frank Murray and thanks to others who have volunteered to help out. Their turn will be coming up. for taking the recyclable matter to the landfill.

Safety:
Nicola Howlin Health and Safety Advisor with Roadbridge L.T.D in association with the Construction industry will be giving a presentation to class’s 1 st – 6 th on Friday 10 th February 2006. A “Play Safe” Competition will ensue from the presentation.

Welcome back to school pupils, teachers and staff for the second term of the school year. May 2006 be a year of health, happiness and prosperity for everybody.

Many thanks to everybody involved in our Christmas celebrations. The Carol service was conducted in a most joyous and prayerful way. Many thanks to Mrs Gavin, Mrs Cooney and indeed all the teachers whose classes were involved in singing, reading and to the infants classes whose beautiful angels and fine shepherds attended. (We were delighted that they featured on the Castlebar website) Thanks also Ms Reiltín O’Grady for her instrumental group, Ms Nicola Reilly for her guitar group and Mrs Aisling Tuohy for her help and support. Sincere thanks to the Parents Association for organising a most enjoyable visit from Santa Claus

School Mass:
The school Mass and preparation liturgy for Confirmation will be held on Sunday next January 29th at 10a.m. in the Parish Church Castlebar. The choir will be singing at this Mass.

Tokens:
Many Thanks to all of you for supporting the Tesco Token collection. We look forward to availing of some Sports equipment with these tokens.
The school is also registered to become involved in the Super Value kids in Action voucher scheme. We will be accepting vouchers until April 7 th 2006. We would greatly appreciate your support with this initiative.

Modern Language:
As part of our involvement with the Modern Language for Primary School initiative we look forward to a visit from Pierre Brice from Aix-en-Provence IUFM – France. He will be on placement with us from February 23rd – March 16 th. Bienvenue Monsieur Brice

Environmental Award:
The school has been short listed for an environmental award by Mayo County Council. The award will be presented to Mrs Anne Deere –Murrihy, Mrs Angela Gavin (Green School Co-ordinators) and members of the Green School Committee on Monday 5th December 2005 at 11.00a.m. in Aras an Chonatae in Castlebar. We wish to congratulate the teachers the pupils, the parents and everybody associated with the project. It is a great honour for the whole school community. Carol Service:
The annual Parish Carol service will take place in the church on Wednesday 14th December @ 8p.m. The school choir has been invited to participate in the service. Please bring your child(ren) to the church in good time as seating will be at a premium.

Our own Carol service will take place in the school shortly before the holidays. Rehearsals are already taking place for both services.

Drama & visual Arts:
On Monday 28th November 2005 the West Midlands Theatre group presented their annual pantomime “Old King Cola” in the school. They also involved pupils in the production. This audience participation proved very popular with everyone in the hall. It was a hilarious show which proved very popular with all. They are invited back again next year.

On Friday 16th December 2005 the pupils from the junior classes will go to the Linenhall to the Streetwise production of “A Magic Merry Christmas” it has been dubbed as “an exciting fun filled show packed with illusions and magic routines providing non-stop comedy – an absolute riot. We trust that they will enjoy it.

On Monday 12th December 2005 from 10a.m. to 11. 30.am. the pupils from 3 rd class with their teacher Mrs Cooney will be in the Linenhall for a Visual Arts workshop. The workshop will include a gallery tour/talk followed by a practical workshop facilitated by art workers. It will also explore the themes and artistic techniques used in a selection of the works in the Mayo Artists Exhibition currently on display in the Art Gallery.

On Wednesday 21st December 2005 the pupils from the middle and Senior standards will visit the Cinema to view the ever popular “The Chronicles of Narnia” which is based on the books of - some of the pupils have already read the books and they are now eagerly awaiting the screen version of the stories.

Amidst all the exciting activities the pupils have been doing tests in Literacy and Numeracy and all other subject areas of the Curriculum. You will be informed of the results at the annual Parent- Teacher meeting on Wednesday 7th December

Cross Country Running:
Congratulations to the boys U-12 team on being runners-up in the Connacht Championships held in Ballina a few weeks ago. We thank Mr. Shaughnessy for his involvement with the team and also Ms. McHale, Ms. Carey and the parents for their help and support. The members of the team were – Daniel Byrne, Bernard Kennedy, Colm Nevin, Michael Conway, Keith Egan & Johnathan Walshe (sub Liam Nevin) We will have four members of the team again next year.

Broadband:
Broadband has arrived in our school and is now up and running in all classrooms. We wish to acknowledge the efficient services of Mr. Chris Walsh, whose expertise in IT is second to none. He is always there to share his knowledge with us. Thank you so much Chris.

Ryan Tubridy Radio Show:
Last Thursday 20 th October 2005 the Ryan Tubridy show came from Castlebar County Library. On the show Ms. Michelle Rowley was interviewed by Ryan about her experiences in the U.S.A. when she sailed for Ireland.Michelle was accompanied by Mrs. Anne Cooney and 3 rd class pupils. The pupils spoke of the books which they like to read and they also sang a song. Everybody agreed that they acquitted themselves very well. It was a first for Snugboro N.S. to be on national radio. Thank you to all who rang in complimenting the teachers and the pupils on their performance.

Road Safety:
The pupils in 6 th class have started a road safety module in cycling every Wednesday in the school. The course (which lasts an hour) is conducted by Mr. Gerry Butler. It is hoped to raise awareness of safety on the road. We thank Mayo Co. Co. for sponsoring the course.

Vere Foster Medal:
The Vere Foster Medal is an award, which is bestowed on the student who obtains the highest mark in teaching practice in each of the teacher training colleges in Ireland. This year Mrs Helen Grealis obtained the award from Hibernian College. Helen, who is a sister of Mrs. Anne Cooney did her teaching practice and work experience here in our school. We congratulate Helen on her success and we wish her many happy years in teaching,

Cross Country Running:
The boys U-10 team and girls U-10 team each came first in the West Mayo Finals held in Ballinrobe on Wednesday 21 st September 2005. The boys U-12 were runners up in their section. All 3 teams go forward to the County finals in Ballina. Christopher Gainly (3 rd class) was 1 st in his section. Well done to all including coach Eamonn Shaughnessy

Michelle sails for Ireland:
We would like to wish Miss Michelle Rowley the very best of luck as she and the other members of the Irish Sailing teams embark on the world championship team sailing competition in the U.S.A. Miss Rowley Senior Infants teacher in Snugboro N.S. and the other five team members departed for Boston on Wednesday Sept 21st 2005. On Thursday they will travel to Newport Rhode Island where they will be making final preparations for the competition. The competition proper begins on Monday September 26th and will continue throughout the week. The final will be held on Saturday October 1st. Ireland has entered three teams of two. It is a great honour for the school that Miss Rowley has been chosen to represent her Country as a member of one of those teams. You can view her progress on www.nyyc.org Team Racing Worlds.

Past pupil St. Peter’s N.S. becomes Cigire:
We would like to say comhgairdeas to Ms Fionnuala Tynan, Tullycommons Castlebar who has passed the examination to become a National Schools Inspector. Fionnuala is daughter of Mary and Christy Tynan Tullycommons. She was a member of the last sixth class to graduate from the old school in 1986. We wish Fionnuala every success in her new career. She will always be guaranteed a Céad mile failte whenever she visits her old Alma Mater with or without portfolio!

Past pupils on the Mayo Minor team:
We wish Pádraig Healy of Patrician Park Castlebar the very best of luck on Sunday next 25 th September 2005. he will line out at left full back for the Mayo Minor team in the All Ireland football final against Down. Pádraig has played consistently well throughout the season. He won player of the Month in the Connacht Telegraph competition for July 2005. Padraig has played well for St. Peter’s N.S. in the past and also for St. Gerald’s College. We are eagerly looking forward to his visit to the school with the cup and the medals! We are all backing you Pádraig.

Gráinne plays in Croke Park:
Gráinne Gavin of 3 rd class was picked to go to Croke Park on Sunday last to play Camogie for Mayo. Girls. She travelled to Dublin on Friday morning and stayed for the weekend in the Aronmore hotel. At half time in the Dublin v Clare camogie match Gráinne’s Mayo girls team played Donegal boys team. The Donegal boys were victorious by a goal. Gráinne and the members of her team were introduced to President Mary McAleese before the Senior All Ireland Camogie final.

Green Flag
The “Green Flag” presentation to the school and raising of the flag took place on Friday 24 th June 2005 at 1.30p.m. in beautiful sunshine. Photos of the day will be placed on the website shortly. Thank you to everyone who attended.

Computers
We wish to thank all of the parents and the people from the wider community who collected Tesco computertokens. The grand total was 31,500, which will entitle us to one laptop computer.

6th Class Mass
On Tuesday afternoon June 22nd at 2.00 p.m. there was a Mass in the school for the pupils in 6th class. Thank you to the many parents who came along for the event. We wish to thank Fr.Drury, Mr. Shaughnessy, Mrs. Gavin and Mrs Tuohy for the very beautiful Mass. We wish the 6th class every success and happiness in post-primary school. A special word of farewell to those families whose last child will be finishing in the school. We thank them for all their support down the years.

Computers:

  • The Scéim Inse Scéil project – (the use of computers in the teaching of Irish) has now been completed. The presentation day will be on June 17 th 2005 in the Mayo Education Centre. We are very proud of the input made by the teachers and pupils of 5th and 6th classes. Thank you to Mr Shaughnessey and Ms McHale for all their work both inside and outside of school hours.

The school has purchased another laptop for the use of teachers and pupils alike. We are very grateful to Mr. Chris Walshe and Mrs Catherine Reilly for their technical support with the computers.

  • Tesco Tokens – We thank all those who have sent in the Tesco tokens to the school Please send in any other Tesco Tokens, which you may have. We will be accepting them until early June. Please enlist the help of friends and neighbours etc. We hope to get a laptop computer and some software. Thank you again for all your help to date.
  • The pupils of Junior & senior infants with their teachers Ms Cawley and Ms Rowley visited “Tumble Jungle” in Ballina last week. The pictures which they took are featured on the front page of the Castlebar website. Confirmation:
We wish to congratulate the pupils in sixth class who made their Confirmation. We wish to thank their class teacher Mr Eamonn Shaughnessy for the wonderful work which he did in preparing the pupils for the big day. Thanks are also due to Mrs Gavin and Mrs. Tuohy for training the choir. A word of appreciation to Mrs Catherine Reilly (school secretary) for the wonderful booklet which she prepared with the children, everyone was impressed by same. Thank you for ensuring that your child(ren) was/were present in good time on the day for the choir and the ceremony. They did us proud. May the Holy Spirit remain with the pupils and guide them throughout their lives.

Hurling:
The boys from St. Pats N.S. Castlebar drew with our boys in the County Hurling Final. The replay is to be played next week. We wish the team and its coach Mr. Shaughnessy the very best of luck in the final.

Sports Day;
The sports for all day will be held at a date to be arranged in June. As always the emphasis is on participation not on winning. We will give you advance notice of the day. You are welcome to come along and enjoy the fun if you have time.

Soccer Blitz:
Thank you for ensuring that your child(ren) was/were present for the blitz on Friday 6 th May 2005. Even though the school was closed there was 100% turnout of the team members. The girls put in a very credible performance in their competition. The boys reached the final where they were narrowly beaten by Kiltimagh.

G.A.A:
In the girls match against the Quay of Westport Snugboro emerged victorious on their home ground. In an earlier match held in McHale Park, Castlebar, they were beaten by Newport.

The boys’ team beat Newport in their match in Castlebar. On 30th May ’05. The Snugboro team travelled to Westport where they were beaten by the score of 4-8 to 2-9. Unfortunately our key player Fergal Durkan had to be taken off early in the second half due to injury. He was sorely missed at midfield.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Eamonn and Tricia Shaughnessy on the birth of their baby daughter Lara.

First Holy Communion:
Congratulations to the children of second class who made their First Holy Communion on Sunday last 24th May 2005 they were all looking very well and took part beautifully in the Mass. We wish to thank their class teacher Ms Reíltín O'Grady for the wonderful work which she has done in preparing the pupils for the big day. Thanks also are due to Mrs Gavin and Mrs. Tuohy for training the choir.

Our sports teams are busy as usual. they have started to bring home the trophies. The girls Camogie team are the new County Champions after winning their match against Tooreen in the mini sevens. Well done!

The Hurling team are through to the County semi finals of the Cumanne na mBunscoil competition. We wish them good luck in that match.

The Lunch time Leagues are continuing in the school.

School Band:
The school band acquitted themselves with honours at the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. They looked very well in their new caps and capes. A lot of hard work was put in by the teachers to enable them to attain such a high standard of marching and playing. We would like to thank everyone who helped to make the band such a great success. A special word of commendation is due to the following: Mrs Marie Loftus (Band Co-ordinator), Ms Catherine McHale (assistant band co-ordinator), Ms Emer Carey, Mrs Ann Cooney and Mrs Aisling Tuohy. Congratulations on a job well done. We would also like to thank the members of the Parents association who helped out on the day.

There were two senior teams team A and team B

Team A: Laura Breslin, Niall McCarney, Denise Lavelle, &and Ciara Browne

Team B: Chloe Helbert, Niamh Moran, Stephanie O’Brien & Emma Prendergast

Team A emerged overall winners while team B were in 5 th place. The A team will participate in the Mayo Final to be held on Saturday next 3 rd April 2004 in Kilasser at 1.00p.m..We all wish them the very best of luck on the day.

French:
In January As part of our involvement with the foreign language initiative we welcomed Mademoiselle Alexandra Peter from Aix-en-Provence IUFM – France to the school. Madame Peter, a student teacher in France gave lessons in the French language and culture to the pupils in the middle and senior standards. She enjoyed her internship in the school. She was particularly impressed by the kindness and courtesy shown her by pupils and staff. The children really enjoyed their time with Madame Peter and wish her Bon chance in her future career.

"Green" Schools
We have been informed in recent days that our hard work in keeping our school "GREEN" is to be rewarded with the renewal of our "GREEN SCHOOL STATUS" and the retention of our "GREEN FLAG" .. more about this later

Our new venture into recycling ink cartridges from printers etc is up and running. A box we received from the company running this scheme is placed in the front hall of the school for pupils to place used cartridges in. We would ask that no packaging be placed in the box and to note that the company do not except epson cartridges. For every cartridge the company use they will make a donation to the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Welcome back to school pupils, teachers and stAff for the second term of the school year. We wish you all health and prosperity for 2005.

We would like to thank and compliment everyone who was involved in our pre-Christmas celebrations and preparations. The Annual Carol service was held on Tuesday December 21 st for all the pupils. There was a beautiful rendition of Carols, and instrumentals and they together with the readings, prayers and reflections made a very prayerful atmosphere. Many thanks to all the angels and shepherds who attended. (We were delighted that they featured on the Castlebar website) Sincere thanks to Ms Nicola Reilly and her guitar group and to Ms Reiltín O’Grady whose music pupils played a medley of traditional Irish airs after the Carol service. Thanks again to Mrs Gavin, Mrs Tuohy, Ms McHale, Ms Carey. Mrs Cooney, and Mr Shaughnessy.

We would like to sincerely thank the Parents Association for organising a visit from Mr. Claus and treats on the morning of the Christmas holidays. The children really enjoyed his visit.

Green School News:
A review of the Green School took place last Wednesday. The Green School Committee under the stewardship of Mrs Ann Murrihy work very hard to implement and promote our Green School policies. A very comprehensive report has been submitted to Mayo County Council. One very positive statistic is that there are now 107 families recycling in our school. Great credit is due to all involved. Many thanks also to Mrs Catherine Reilly for her help in the completion of this work. Also the school is now accepting used ink cartridges from printers at home. These will be forwarded to a company who will make a donation to the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind for everyone reused.

Sports and Games:
The lunchtime league is continuing. Competitions in Cualaigí took place in An Spórtlann. The girls’ team won the first round and they are through to the semi final of the County final. On Wednesday Feb 9th in Westport. Well done to both teams who played so well. Thanks also to Ger White \and Maeve Murphy whose coaching lessons are very evident in the skilful play of the children.

We are very proud of all the senior pupils who participated in the Mayo Athletic Indoor field events in Nenagh. Congratulations to all who won medals!

Congratulations to the pupils of 5 th and 6 th class and their teachers who were involved in the NET days competition, hosted by Mayo Education Centre. Well done to 5 th for their prize-winning interview with Yaz and to 6 th for their digital photography and poem by Gareth Heverin. The school has been presented with a digital camera, disc pen and sponsorship towards digital photography.

Sceím Inste Scéil:
Comhghairdeas to Ms McHale and Mr Shaughnessy and the pupils of 5 th and 6 th classes on their wonderful success in this project. The results of their involvement are a C.D. and a set of books featuring the children’s own work - texts and illustrations on Scealaíochta. These are now part of the school teaching resource library.
