Watching too many science fiction movies I think, PJ. I suppose it depends on what you mean by 'intelligence'. My washing machine is more intelligent than some people I have met.

Some progress has been made in the area of artificial intelligence in terms of creating computers that can learn from experience and carry out relatively simple tasks.

As regards to producing a machine that is more intelligent than a human being I think there's some way to go. I found this article about how much (or little) we know about the human brain ( http://www.smh.com.au/news/9912/04/spectrum/spectrum4.html ) which while not related gives an indication of the complexity involved in trying to replicate it.
