Gaelic games in Castlebar centre around McHale Park (photo above) and Castlebar Mitchels' Sportlann (click for photo) or sports centre and their Gaelic Football pitch (photo below) all located at the end of McHale Road adjacent to the Castlebar Industrial Estate.
Mayo's senior football team has been very successful in recent years and recently beat Sligo in the Connacht Final. The photo below shows action from the early stages of the 1997 Connacht Final.
The red and green Mayo colours are a common sight on young and old alike around Castlebar especially as it approaches all Ireland Final time again. Gaelic football has undergone a wonderful resurgence under the management of John Maughan who hails from Turlough Road in Castlebar.
