Outline of Mayo County Council's Arts Service

 

The Arts Service of Mayo County Council may be divided into 5 categories

      1. Arts information, promotion and advisory service;
      2. Arts programming;
      3. Assistance through the Arts Grants System;
      4. Arts policy and planning;
      5. Networking and partnership facilitation at local, national and international levels.

 

Funding for the following projects was put in place by the Members of the County Council during the 1991 to 1999 period. All of the initiatives were approved by the Mayo Arts Advisory Committee and the elected Members of the Council. The initiatives included facilitation of more than 200 arts and community groups in the following areas of arts development:

 

The main programmes were:

  • Writer in residence programme
  • Heinrich Boll cottage. Artists retreat.
  • Model of best practice in the provision of public art and the utilisation of the "% for art" Scheme (a percentage of public works and infrastructure programmes goes towards the arts).
  • A Community arts development and facilitation strategy for the County.
  • The leader in the promotion of Spatial planning in the Arts.
  • Mayo dance project.
  • Force 10 in Belmullet Writers' weekend.
  • 5 Mayo anthologies.
  • Mayo international folk arts festival - Feile lorrais
  • Tir Saile
  • La Marche du General Humbert
  • The Spirit of Mayo Mayo 5000
  • The Ballinglen Arts Foundation.
  • Mayo Arts Squad schools project including:
    • O Cheann go Cheann
    • Giant steps in the playground.
  • Artist in residence programme
  • FITE FUAITE; The Granuaile parade;
  • Spiorad '98. Musician Residence project.
  • Scribhneoir Conaithe.
  • Ealaion tre Ghaeilge.
  • Discovering arts ability - arts and disability
  • Capital projects -

    • Arts Centre, Ballina;
    • Custom House Studio Westport
  • GMIT arts week
  • GMIT arts management - public lecture series.
  • Supporting the artist. Bursaries/awards/ materials/framing/ recording/education

  • Partnership within the Community in Louisburgh, Kiltimagh and Parkside, Ballina.

  • The establishment of the Mayo Audience development initiative.
  • The initiation of the Dataculture Databox database system with linkage to an arts mapping system.
