Castlebar Juvenile Basketball leagues began their New Year's fixtures last Saturday in the De La Salle Sports Hall with a full programme and some very competitive and close competitions.
With 47 teams to cater for in the various age groups and two divisions in the U14 and U16 girls it looks like being a hectic few months for all involved.

Davitts 23 Carnacon 27
Almost the most exciting game of the day a close contest through out, but a momentary lapse in the third quarter saw Carnacon pull ahead by 8 points a lead which Davitts could not peg back.
Davitts held a one point lead at the end of the first Shane Hopkins scoring 4 of Davitts 5 points Stephen Healy and Jason Gibbons Carnacon's top scorers hitting 2 each for Carnacon. It was all square at the half time mark with Alan Jennings and Stephen Healy both hitting three pointers to keep Carnacon in touch. Davitts Top marksman Shane Hopkins assisted by Diarmuid Sheridan and Mark Calvey finishing for Davitts.
In the third Carnacon hit the front and stayed there, again Jason Gibbons and Stephen Healy scoring 10 of Carnacons 11 points in that quarter with Davitts hitting only 3 in reply.
Davitts finished strongly and cut the lead to just 2 with 21 seconds left but it was Stephen Healy who broke from defense and finished well to leave Carnacon with the points.

T.C.Tigers 43 Bunninadden Comets 24
Comets had no answers to the scoring power of Mary Brennan, Emma Doyle and Deirdre O’Brien in this division one clash, Tigers playing a pressure defense which forced the errors from the Sligo girls who were looking to Aisling Egan under the boards their top scorer on 8 points who was out played by Mary Brennan.
The result of this was never in doubt but again in the third Town Centre pulled into a most comfortable lead with Nettie Flannery intercepting constantly and Emma Doyle finishing the break.
Town Centre controlled the boards game with Deirdre O’Brien,Caroline Gaughan and Mary Brennan notching up 27 points between them..

U16 girls Division 2
Ballintubber 16 Ballycastle 25
Sarah Carey single handedly saw off the Ballintubber challenge putting away 21 of Ballycastle’s 25 points. Ballycastle went on a 12 – 0 run in the second quarter from which Ballintubber failed to recover.
Sarah Carey took most of her scores driving through the heart of the Ballintubber defense playing very simple but effective give and go basketball.
Had Ballintubber finished with a little more consistency they would have been well in the game.

U 12 girls Rowland roofing league
Ballycastle 14 Ballintubber 6
Ballycastle were a much more organized and better drilled outfit and it took Ballintubber 3 quarters of the match to get into gear, they are a very young side with some potential stars in the making. Mary Hopkins making an instant impact with her introduction in the fourth quarter but it was a little late as Geraldine Munnelly and Grainne Grier had already done the damage for Ballycastle.
Ballintubber: Mary Hopkins 4, Siobhan Finnerty, Aine Tierney, Ciara Walsh, Anne Horan, Blathnaid Mahon 2, Aisling Lydon , Shona Henaghan, Maeve Tierney.
Ballycastle: Graine Grier 4, Shona O’Toole, Arlene Tomas 2, Fiona Doherty 2, Lorna Tomas, Geraldine Munnelly 6, Alison Thomas.
U14 Girls - Fibre Pulse league
Undoubtedly the game of the day with the lead constantly changing and then a dose of extra time thrown in for good measure.
Comets better team game and spread of scores just shaded it for them in the end as Ballycastle relied heavily on the fast breaking ability of Liat Barrett who hit a creditable 23 points.
Comets with 6 of their 9 players on the score board and Helen Brennan clocking up 16 topped off with a three pointer had much stronger shooters with most of their scores coming from set plays and perimeter shooting with Bernie Gavaghan finishing off any rebounds.
For Ballycastle Liat Barrett made some excellent interceptions and finished well assisted with some very strong boards play by Lesley Gaughan who hit 6 points herself.
With the game tied at 34 points a piece at the end of the fourth Liat Brrett put away 4 points cancelled out by four by Helen Brennan in extra time but it was a basket by Ann-Marie Kelly who sealed Ballycastles fate.
Overall an excellent game of basketball promising much for the future.
