Climbers on Croagh Patrick - Reek Sunday 2003 |
For all of ye out there thinking of tackling the Reek this Sunday, 31 July 2005, for the 100th Anniversary of the dedication of the church on the summit some words of advice:
1. Most importantly, know your limits. If you feel on the way up that you can't make it to the top you're probably right, turn back before you get too tired.
2. No matter what the weather, bring clothing adequate for the worst of conditions including rain gear and a hat to protect from rain, cold and sun.
3. Base clothing on multiple layers instead of a couple of heavy ones.
4. Try to wear a wicking fabric next to your skin i.e. not cotton which will absorb sweat and remain wet and cold.
4. Carry at least some food and drink with you. Recommended food includes choclate and bananas for energy.
5. Don't assume that just because you have a mobile phone you'll be safe!!!
6. Bring a stick for support and balance
7. Take your time - It's not a race, enjoy yerself. Chat to the people around you, look at the scenery.
Most importantly have a great day and stay safe and if all comes to all and you do get in to trouble and need help, there are people there to help you - Best place to go for help is the medical tent at the flat area before the final steep part.
ENJOY YERSELVES!
