Hurling History

Did you know that Mr James Cotter, a native of Killorglin, Co. Kerry, came to Castlebar as the clerk of works in the building of the Holy Rosary Church. He had been a well known hurler and had played for Blackrock in Cork prior to coming to Castlebar. In 1902 he captained the Castlebar hurling team that travelled to Roscommon to play the local Gaels team. In that year also the Mayo County Board was revived after a break of ten years and James Cotter, after much persuasion, was elected Chairperson. He continued in this role until 1906, at which time he left the county.
