Castlebar Mitchels 2-10: Belmullet 1-9
A Jekyll and Hyde performance by Castlebar Mitchels saw them gain the necessary points from this vital encounter. Played in McHale Park on Sat evening last the points were vital for both team but for different reasons. By virtue of the win Castlebar are assured of the play off stages for promotion. But what a way to achieve it.

In the first half Castlebar were totally dominant in all sectors of the field. Playing with confidence and showing the skills with which this team undoubtedly have they put Belmullet to the rack. The play was fluid, intelligent and highly entertaining from a Castlebar point of view. Once Eamonn Kennedy had neutralized an early Belmullet point, the Mitchels took over. In the 5th min a goal was disallowed when the referee blew for a free without allowing the advantage but two minutes later Paul Jordan made no mistake when he finished off a great sweeping movement which came from the home side goal. Despite the dominance Naughton in goal was having a busy time and brought off one particularly spectacular save. In the 10 min Fintan McHale was brought through, with a sublimely delicate chip over the defence by Declan Shaw and made no mistake by crashing the ball to the back of the net. Points followed from Kennedy and Jordan before Paul Jordan found himself with only the goalie to beat but somehow managed to put the ball wide. Searing runs from the defence were mixed with accurate kicks as well as positive off the ball running and support were a feature of the Mitchels play. With good possession play Flynn found himself once aging in the clear and his bullet like drive came off the butt of the post with the goalkeeper beaten. McHale with a spectacular overhead kick was disappointed to see the crossbar deny him the opportunity of a goal of the season claim. As the referee called for half time it was a happy Castlebar team which went to the dressing room leading by 2-7 to 0-3.

The second half began as the first ended with Paul Fitzmaurice scoring within ten seconds of the resumption to be followed by a Kevin Malone super point within the first min. This was followed by an Eamonn Kennedy point in the 10th minute giving them a 13-point lead and playing well. Inexplicably this was to be the last Mitchel's score of the game and what had been an excellent performance turned into a morass of bad play. A Belmullet point by Carolan was followed in the 13 min by a penalty award, which Carolan struck, sweetly into the back of the net. Both teams then completely lost their shape, none more so than Castlebar. On 20 minutes Belmullet opened up the home defence only to see the upright save a certain goal. It was backs to the wall football and not pretty to watch as Belmullet kicked over four unanswered points before the referee blew the welcome final whistle.
With the necessary points secured to reach the play off stages, the Mitchels management will have much to ponder on as to how such a performance descended into such an abysmal second half. This is not to take away from Belmullet but the mistakes and errors of the last 20 minutes have been repeated in previous games. The learning curve will have to reach a definitive situation before realistic ambitions of senior football are to become a reality

Minors
Congratulations to the Minor team and management who pulled off a great win in the Div Final in Ballina last Sunday. Character, grit and determination were the hallmarks of this win and ones they will need to bring next Sunday. The best of luck to them in the Co Final on Sun next.

Mitchels U- 8's
There was a very exciting round of the town league last Saturday with both games ending in a draw. The game between Emmetts and McHales;les finished up at 8 points each. McHales were the stronger team all through but a spirited display saw Emmett's snatch a draw.

Davitts and Pearses each took a hard earned point from their game. Pearses were in a strong position at half time with good displays from Micheal Flynn Nathan O Malley Kevin Keena Cian Gibbons and Brian O Malley. To their credit Davitts improved greatly in the second half to earn a draw. Tony Sweeney Martin Collins Patrick Sweeney Conor Moylete and Rossa Clancy played direct open football.

The league table is as follows Emmetts - 3 Pearses - 3 McHale -1 Davitts - 1. So with the last round of games next Saturday everybody has their destiny in their own hands, with Davitts V McHales and Emmetts V Pearses.

U-10 and U-11
The U- 10 recently lost by a point to Ballintubber in the Parke blitz. Training is continuing on Saturday mornings and we are going to run an U - 11 league shortly to finish off the year.
