Things are starting to get back to normal after the Christmas break and with the semester Exams having concluded it looks like its all systems go.

First off the mark this year were the Sailing club, who have started the year in a determined fashion. They are hoping to set up links with the Mayo Sailing Club for the coming season and if last Sunday was anything to go by it should be a very enjoyable and productive venture.

14 hardy souls braved the January winds to get an introduction to the sport last Sunday at Rosmoney under the expert eye of Blair Stanaway and John Gillivan. It certainly wasn’t a day for the faint hearted with the gusting winds making it very much a case of straight in at the deep end. Everyone got an opportunity to influence their own destiny (Though Blair seemed to be doing the Lions share of the work), and everyone kept the boats pointing in the right direction and more importantly the right way up! We feel we have to ask questions of Maura and Elizabeth who felt they didn’t get sufficiently soaked as they ripped along leaning heavily in the strong winds- so decided to dive into the water on completion of their sailing stint.????

A hot shower and warm fire in the club-house were extremely welcome and everyone involved would like to thank The Mayo Sailing club for such a wonderful afternoon, especially Commodore David Baird and Damien Cashin who organized it all and Blair John and Cathal Geoghan who looked after us all so well on the day. If that’s what can be done at short notice on a cold January day, it looks like being a very enjoyable seasons sailing ahead. Best of luck to The Sailing club with their plans to develop their already impressive set up at Rosmoney

The Surf Club are also ignoring the fact that it’s January in the West of Ireland and slap bang in the middle of the Atlantic may not be the coziest place to be. They are determined to make a big impact at the upcoming colleges Gathering in Bundoran at the Donegal Adventure Centre, where clubs from I.T. Sligo , Letterkenny and N.U.I.G. will all be represented. To that end they are heading to Achill next Friday for training and there will also be a chance for beginners to get lessons. Anyone interested in attending should add their name to the sign up sheet or Contact Nigel Or Cliodhna.

Further evidence, (If any were needed), that comfort and normally accepted procedures are not high on anyones priority list is offered by the Men’s Football Team. Faced with a need to get some serious training in prior to their Trench Cup Game against Portobello College and a difficulty in getting suitable training times to accommodate everyone, they have taken the drastic action of training at 8.00 a.m.

More than a few eyebrows have been raised as people struggle in at 9.00 to see 20 men in full flight being put through their paces by Billy McNicholas who is doing a great job with this team. They will play a challenge match against G.M.I.T. in Galway next Thursday as their last match in preparation for the championship. The Womens football Team and the Hurlers will also be inn Galway On Wednesday as they Take On N.U.I.G and the Rugby Team are looking forward to hosting N.U.I.G in Castlebar

Yes it appears that the cobwebs have been removed, the exams finished and everything is starting to happen. Next thing to keep an eye out for is the inter class indoor soccer competition which will be commencing over the next few weeks.
