Pat Loftus (L) and Eddie Burns (R) circa 1914

When this photo was taken circa 1914, Pat Loftus was the Gatekeeper at Saint Mary's and Eddie Burns was the Storekeeper. Pat's son, who was Gatekeeper after him, married Josie Dwyer. Josie was the last inhabitant of the Gatekeeper's Lodge at Saint Mary's.  Josie's sister married a chemist (?) named Twigs who had  a shop, I believe, at the corner of Chapel Street and Tucker Street ("Twigs corner"). There are still related Loftus families in Castlebar, and a somewhat distant relative of Josie Dwyer is a regular contributor to the Nostalgia Board. The position of Storekeeper was later filled by the much respected Willie Cameron of Westport Road.
