Huge turnout for Juvenile Hurling/Camogie training

Up to 150 youngsters turned up last Wednesday evening for the start of U-8, U-10, & U-12 hurling/camogie training. Gerry Lane had all his coaching staff geared up for the challenge and the beautiful spring weather made it an evening to remember. Thanks to the Order of Malta for their pressence again this year. Training continues this week on Wednesday evening from 6pm-7pm and even if you missed last week there will still be an opportunity to register this week.

Get Ready - Hurling on the Green coming soon!

Once again Castlebar Mitchels Hurling/Camogie Club are running the project Hurling on the Green whereby the children of Castlebar are provided with an opportunity to play hurling/camogie, while having lots of fun, in their own area and at not cost to club members. By bringing hurling to the local ‘green areas’ within the town, not only the children benefit but also the parents and indeed the local community. It is hoped that sponsorship will once again cover the costs involved.

Three coaches will be involved. Steve McKeogh from Clare who is a member of the Club’s senior team and is also training the U-16 panel. He is a student at GMIT in Castlebar. Maeve Murphy from Tipperary plays senior camogie, coaches the U10s and is also a student at GMIT Castlebar. Martin Greaney from Breaffy plays on the senior club team as well as with Mayo and is a student with GMIT in Galway.

The Easter schedule is as follows

Tue Apr 22 - Rowan Drive: Wed 23 Apr - The Mall: Thu 24 Apr - St Brigids Crescent: Fri 25 Apr The Mall.

Castlebar Credit Union to sponsor ‘Hurler of the Week’ in schools.

Once again thanks to the Castlebar Credit Union for coming on board to sponsor our ‘Hurler of the Week’ in the National Schools. Next week we will have a list of all the winners from the various schools and each will be presented with a hurley. The Credit Union deserves great ‘Credit’ for all the initiatives they are involved in that help our young people here in Castlebar.

U-14s travel to Strandhill

On Sunday last our U-14 team travelled to Sligo to take on Strandhill in a challenge. Strandhill playing with the breeze in the 1st half built up a commanding lead by half-time. The Mitchels lads though came storming back in the 2nd half and were unlucky in the end to lose by just one point with the final score being 6-4 to 5-6. The u-14s are preparing for the Feile na nGael which takes place in Ballyheane/Breaffy on Bank holiday Monday May 5th. U-14 training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings 6.30 - 7.30pm in Davitt College.

U-18 TRAINING

Mondays & Wednesdays 7-8pm on the Josie Munnelly pitch.

Camogie Game

The Mitchels camogie team play the 4th round of the Galway League this week. They are down to play Turloughmore and we wish them the best of luck.

Ger & Eoin star for Mayo Hurlers

Congratulations to the Mayo hurling team on their great victory over Louth in McHale Park on Sunday. Our club was especially proud of Ger Whyte and Eoin Shaughnessy who both had great games.

Well done also to the Mayo hurling board for their initiative in giving out free tickets to all u-16s. Despite the inclement weather a good crowd turned out to cheer on the Mayo lads.

Lotto

Last weeks lotto was held in Stalky’s with Amanda Ennis spinning the wheel. Amanda came very close to scooping the jackpot but had to settle for ?100. To spin next week will be John Brogan, Station Road who will have the opportunity in An Sportlann, when he will try for the jackpot now standing at ?3900. Other winners were house draw Conor Deegan, ?20 to Elaine McLoughlin and Michael O Sullivan. See you next week in An Sportlann about 1030 pm.

Castlebar Mitchels Club Social Night.

On Easter Sunday night next there will be a members & new members Disco and Party taking place in Doc’s Bar and Function Room in An Sportlann. Music will be by ‘Mad Mick’ and admission is 5 euros. Hope to see all our hurlers and camogie ladies there for what should be a great night.

Best Wishes

Our Club sends it’s best wishes to Noel Byrne our P.R.O. and our good friend and supporter Mick Shaughnessy. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

Congratulations to Carmel & Michael Boland on the birth of their new son.
