Annie O'Malley, Ireland's oldest woman was 107 on Monday. She lives in Castlemacgarret nursing home near Claremorris but is originally from Roxboro, Ballinrobe.

Lyric fm begins school outreach programme to Castlebar

The Lyric fm Breakfast team have invited students and teachers from Cork, Waterford, Castlebar, Athlone, Sligo and Dublin to take part in their "pictures of the mind" competition. The Breakfast team will meet students and introduce them to the worlds of radio broadcasting and classical music. Teachers or Students should write to them and explain why they would like to meet the team and welcome them to their school. Tourism yielded £472m in Ireland West last year

The Ireland west region has made £472.1 million in tourism revenue. Mrs. Mary Bennett announced this at the AGM of Ireland West Tourism. She also said that this is an increase of 15.5% over 1999.

Castlebar Tidy Towns Competition 2001

The winners of the Castlebar Tidy Towns Competition 2001 will be announced on Friday the 5th of October in the Travellers Friend Hotel at 8:30pm. The prizes will be given to the tidiest school, housing estates, the nicest hanging baskets and window boxes, shop fronts, tidiest filling station, public buildings and places and the tidiest private enterprise.

Hospital Entrance Now More Dangerous Than Ever - Kenny
The Mayo News this week.
Deputy Enda Kenny has written to the chief executive of the Western Health Board about dangers at the entrance to the Mayo General Hospital. He said that this is because the barrier protected car parks are awkward to enter and very far away from the hospital. He said that a serious accident will occur if this problem persists any longer. He suggested that a carpark with a covered walkway directly into the hospital would solve this problem.

Blue Flag For Louisburgh Beach Threatened

Carramore beach in Louisburgh is in danger of losing its blue flag because of limited access. A local landowner decided to define the boundaries of his property which included some of the parking area which was previously used by visitors to the beach. The County Council has attempted to reach an agreement with the landowner but with no results so far. This is just the latest beach in the Louisburgh area to have its access restricted, Uggool beach is no longer accessible and Thallabawn beach is "virtually inaccessible".

Mayo families mourn missing NY firemen
The Western People this week.
Two firefighters with Mayo links are missing after last week's horrific attacks on the Twin Towers. They are Dennis McHugh whose father was from Garrymore and John Tierney whose father was from Hollymount. Two other people from the West of Ireland are also missing. Anne-Marie McHugh from Tuam worked in the Twin Towers and has not been in contact since the disaster. Kieran Gorman from Sligo worked with a construction company which was involved in work on the Twin Towers when the planes struck the buildings.

The 2002 Esat Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition was launched on Tuesday the 11th of September. The entries are being accepted now until October 5th 2001. The exhibits will be on show in January.

New Government Strategy to Boost Smaller Towns
The Western People this week.
The Government has launched a National Spatial Strategy. Mr. Noel Dempsey T.D and Minister for the Environment and Local Government said that the new strategy will help deliver more balanced social, economic, cultural, environmental and physical development throughout the state and it will help boost small towns, villages and hinterlands.
