O God, you are my God, for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting.

Has there ever been a more passionate expression of the soul’s desire for God?  It is a thirst in the inner soul, a pining in the body.  Saint Augustine famously wrote of the restless longing which is not satisfied until the soul rests in God.  Jeremiah described it as an overpowering seduction.  Like the missing piece of a jigsaw, there is a God shaped emptiness in the human heart.

Love takes time.  The desire for God calls one to spend time gazing in your sanctuary, soaking oneself in God’s strength and glory.

Your love is better than life.  The Gospel asks the eternal question, what does it profit one to win all that the world has to offer but to ruin one’s inner life?

No earthly banquet can compare with the joy of praising the Lord and knowing the warmth of God’s loving protection.

In the shadow of  your wings I rejoice.
