We want to hang on to life, we don’t want to leave our friends. However difficult life may have been, we want to hold on to it. That is a very deep instinct and it is my firm belief that through prayer, through reading and reflection, faith teaches us that there is something beyond death, that life is not absurd, that it is not going to end in frustration. It is faith in the person of Jesus Christ who became man, died and rose again from the dead - that is the key. When you have got that firmly in your mind and heart, then you can say: ‘Into Thy hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.’ That prayer, which I pray daily, is the prayer of Our Lord himself when he was dying on the cross.
