In Ireland we are so familiar with water.  Over the last few weeks we have had plenty of it in the form of rain.  Often our rivers, lakes and water schemes have become polluted.

Tormented by thirst in the desert the Jewish people grumbled.  The symbol of water in the bible assures tremendous importance because it comes for a culture and area where water was scarce and seen as a precious gift.  The water from the rock quenches the thirst of the Israelites, the water from the well at Sychar was central to the exchange between Jesus and the woman of Samaria.

‘Anyone who drinks the water that I shall give will never be thirsty again:

the water that I shall give will turn into a living spring, welling up to eternal life.’

We have been blessed with the gift of faith.  We were welcomed into the family of God when water was poured on our heads in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  As we journey towards Easter let us renew that spirit of faith through prayer, fasting and helping the poor.  The spirit of Jesus is with us each day to strengthen us in whatever we face.  Use the custom of blessing ourselves each day with holy water, a reminder of our baptism and of God’s presence with us.

‘Glory to you, O Christ, you are the Word of God!

Lord, you are really the saviour of the world;

Give me the living water, so that I may never get thirsty.

Glory to you, O Christ, you are the Word of God!’

(Gospel Acclamation)
