A few years before his death, Bishop Sheen underwent open-heart surgery.  There was great concern about his ability to endure the operation because of his advanced age.  After his recovery, a reporter asked him if he had been afraid of dying.  The Bishop replied that he had not been worried.  “If I should leave this world,” he said,  “I will be in heaven with Christ and if I remain, Christ will be here with me.”  He had faith that there was no way he would be separated from his Lord.

St. Paul states in today’s second reading that there is nothing which will separate him from Christ; not persecution, hunger, danger or even death.  He feels very secure about the eternal stability of his divine relationship.

How confident are we of our lasting love and union with the Lord?  Aren’t there many temptations which can lure us away from our baptismal promises to be friends of Jesus forever?  Why is our love so shaky and uncertain, while many others are so confident?

Bishop Sheen’s unwavering trust flowed to a great extent from his daily holy hour which he observed for many years, using the time for deep personal prayer with God.  He always spent his sacred hour in a church, wherever he happened to be, and he constantly and enthusiastically recommended the practice to others.
