Today, let us ask ourselves whether we really experience the peace of Christ in our lives.  Do we experience him in our family, in our neighbourhood, in our parish and society?  It all depends on the level of our participation in the Sunday liturgy, in the affairs of the parish, and society.  The world around us needs you and me.  The parish needs your help to reach out to the needy.  You can be an instrument of peace in your own family and in your neighbourhood.  There are plenty of opportunities - you could be an active member of the Vincent DePaul Society or Legion of Mary, you can organise prayer groups in your neighbourhood, get involved in some social projects, visit the sick in the hospital, do something constructive for the youth and children.  If you are a committed Christian then you cannot but be part of a group.  Sadly, some Christians are only onlookers, and not participants.  They pass judgements and comments on what others do.  They never bother to contribute to the building up of fellowship.  What about our participation in the Sunday liturgy?  Do we make an effort to reach out to others - to someone whom we do not know?  There are a number of people, perhaps, in this Church who do not know you or whom you do not know.  Why not make an effort from today onwards, at least to say ‘Hello’ to some of them.

Once, a man came to the church wearing a big hat.  He sat in the front pew.  Obviously people behind him were annoyed - they began to murmur.  At last someone had the courage to approach him and gently tell him that his hat was blocking others from seeing the altar.  The man immediately took off his hat and said loudly: “I wore this hat on purpose.  For the past many years I have been coming to this church for Mass.  It is the first time that someone has spoken to me.”  Instead of waiting to see someone coming to the church with tall hats, let us reach out to those whom we do not know and exchange the peace of Christ with them.  May our participation in the breaking of the bread help us to be more concerned about others and thus experience in our lives the joys and peace of the Risen Christ.  Amen.
