This is a psalm in which we do the listening and God does the talking.  The lesson is about the inner meaning of sacrifice.  What God wants is mercy or love rather than empty sacrifice.

God has no need of any kind of sacrifice.  The need is on our side.  Making sacrifice, or engaging in any religious function, helps us to focus on aspects of our relationship with God.  Voluntary sacrifice helps us to express our appreciation of God’s gifts in thanksgiving, to acknowledge the majesty of God in adoration, to show the sincerity of our sorrow for sin.

If we back up our words of petition with personal sacrifices it adds authenticity to our prayer.  In common parlance, we put our money where our mouth is - which is precisely what Matthew did in leaving his toll booth to follow Jesus.  One act of mercy or practical charity pleases God more than a thousand words.

What I want is mercy, not sacrifice.
