Weddings never go out of style.  While the bride always gets attention, little is made of the bridesmaids.  Not true in today’s Gospel, where we focus on ten bridesmaids, all equally devoted.  What they have in common is that they are waiting, they have brought oil (in varying quantities) and they fall asleep.

Firstly - waiting: it takes up a lot of life.  We wait to get out on our own, to get married, to have children.  There must always be something beyond, something worth waiting for.

All ten slept - perfectly natural and right.  Jesus does not expect people to be continually peering up into the heavens like an air-raid sentry.  Normal life goes on: money must be earned, investments looked into, food cooked, people fed, babies washed, education undertaken, weddings held and funerals attended.

The fact that five felt it wise to provide extra oil proves the clincher.  What is this oil?  It could be the oil of faith, which can be shallow and superficial, more doctrine than faith, more practice than belief.  The wise have a deeper level of oil which continually feeds the flame of life.

If you were removed from the familiar landmarks of church and friends, surrounded by mocking unbelievers, if illness confined you - who can you take oil from?  Some things are not transferable.  Time to check your oil levels.
