Being salt and light

The theme of the July 2002 World Youth Day in Canada is contained in this Sunday’s Gospel: ‘you are the salt of the earth - you are the light of the world.’  As in organising any event, Toronto’s preparations are like salt and light - imperceptible and visible.  Like light, the practical details are usually visible, concentrated and somewhat predictable.  The spiritual preparation of pilgrims, on the other hand, is like salt - invisible and at times scattered and unpredictable.  Yet nonetheless just as vital to the success and life of the event.

The human character is much the same.  There are visible and imperceptible dimensions to every human soul.  But one aim is held by all: making a difference in our world.  But how? Live life to the full:

Be faithful to your spouse.

Be the one at the office who refuses to cheat.

Be the neighbour who acts neighbourly.

Be the employee who does the work and doesn’t complain.  Pay your bills promptly.  Do your part and enjoy life.

Don’t speak one message and live another.

After all, I cannot hear what you say, for listening to what you do.   Actions speak loudest, and like salt and light add flavour and brightness to life.
