At First Sight

We understand from babies that seeing takes a while to get used to.  Through play, babies learn to sort out the visual data of space and distance and how their bodies relate to other people and objects.  Big stuff for a small child.

So what was it like for the blind man of the Gospel to match familiar sounds and voices to previously unseen people and places?  Marvellous and disconcerting surely.  Like a baby he had to learn how to see.

Physical sight is one reality, but at a deeper level, you see what you’re trained to see.  We’ve all experienced a skilled guide bring previously unseen depths to a piece of art or a building.  What are our eyes skilled at seeing?  The good or the bad, what’s present or what’s lacking?  A kindness done or the imagined motive behind it?  Do we have a view or a vision of people?  Religion is no protection from blindness to the hand of God.  Family, community and upbringing have prepared us to see what we witness.

On Mother’s Day, when gratitude and visits home prevail, pray for the gift of insight:  ‘try to discover what the Lord wants of you’ (second reading).  Your acquaintances won’t believe their eyes.
