Want a Hand?

Strange how what you make your living from can cause your demise.  It’s as true today as it was for Peter.  Water was his source of living, but like all fishermen, Peter didn’t trust the sea.

The wariness is natural and continues as we stay in the boat - in the narrow confines of our lives and longings.  It’s said that the way to get to the essence of anything is to sink into it, but few do it.  Letting go and relaxing into the water is the hardest part, as any novice swimmer will tell you.  It’s the same with God.  Sinking into God and letting go of our foolish adult need to control is a tall order.

Still our first reading reminds us that God comes to us in the little things - so surely his hand is there for us.  As Peter was sinking, his hand is there for us.  As Peter was sinking, he gripped a hand sensitive to touch; a hand that could bleed and drive a nail, could pray and bless or hold and be held.  It was a hand a lot like yours; expert at washing dishes, changing babies, pressing computer keys, playing music, driving cars, planting flowers, operating machinery and painting pictures. To anyone out of their depth, Jesus’ hands are reaching out.  Ask Peter.
