The Road to Emmaus
Two
of the disciples one named Cleopas were walking to the village of Emmaus
seven miles outside Jerusalem. They
were both very down and depressed because of what had happened to Jesus. All their hopes had been shattered.
A
stranger joined them on the road.
Even though it was Jesus they did not recognise Him. As in many appearances of Jesus after His
Resurrection, He was the same Jesus, but also different. So they began to talk about all that had
happened. And the stranger began to
explain to them. He ‘opened’ the
scriptures for them - the promises that God had made etc. Then at the meal in Emmaus they recognised
Him at ‘the breaking of the bread’.
As
we share in the Mass this morning may the scriptures be opened for us
also. Let us listen with an open
heart and with faith in what God is saying to us. When we receive the Lord in Communion let us recognise the Lord
who loves us, who is with us in our lives every day. This is true especially when life is going
bad for us - bereavement, trouble, sickness, sense of loss etc. We thank God for the gift of His Son who
shows us the path of life.
