Corrosion and Self-destruction

Books printed before the middle of the 19th century endured many hundreds of years.  In contrast, today’s books self-destruct after 50 years or so.  The reason is change in papermaking.  Chemicals now used in the process leave an acid residue that gradually corrodes the paper.

In our lives, there is an equally corrosive effect when we harbour anger and resentment.  Holding a grudge against someone who has wronged us destroys our whole being, physically, emotionally and spiritually.  It literally eats us up.

There are times when it’s natural to feel anger or resentment, but we can get rid of these negative emotions through forgiveness.  Forgiveness not only frees others from the destructive effects of our ill will, it frees us as well.

Let’s be practical about forgiveness.  The best way to learn to forgive the great wrongs is by ‘letting people off the hook’ in the smaller details of life.  The request forgotten, the job not done on time, the botched order - these can be met with a freeing; ‘Don’t worry about it.’  Simple acts of forgiveness hone our skills to forgive bigger offences.  Like reading a book, begin small.  The larger volumes (like forgiveness) can come later.

Peter asked: ‘How often should I forgive?  As many as seven times?’  Jesus said to him, ‘Not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’
