‘I have seen, and I am the witness that he is the Chosen One of God.’

There’s no trace of doubt at all in John’s affirmation of his cousin.  One would need great certainty to endorse one’s contemporary in such language.  But John did.  No doubt, they had reflected together in the wilderness and had discerned the voice of the Father speaking to them both.

And yet, a short while later, John sent messengers to cousin Jesus: ‘Are you he… or should we wait for someone else?’  John had to deal with ambiguity: ‘I did not know him myself and yet, it was to reveal him to Israel that I came baptising with water’.  And then the certainty - ‘I have seen and I am the witness’.

Certainty would be lovely, wouldn’t it?  But, it’s not like that:  we live with ambiguity and struggle - and the pain it involves.

Sometimes, when I share with those in the depths of depression, at the certainty of Holy Communion - ‘This is the Lamb of God’,  I shudder.  Like John the Baptist, I ask - ‘Is that what it’s all about or am I leading others and being led up the garden path’.

It’s a struggle.  And yet, the Lamb of God and Isaiah struggled with uncertainty and doubt too, with pain, anguish, impending death - all that is human.  The sin of the world, all that is painful in the human condition, is what he came to take away.  My baptism into his life and death, while painful, is my road to fullness of life.

Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred let me sow love,

where there is injury let me sow pardon,

where there is doubt let me sow faith,

where there is despair let me sow hope,

where there is darkness let me give light,

where there is sadness let me give joy.

O divine master, grant that I may not try to be comforted but to comfort,

not try to be understood but to understand,

not try to be loved but to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

It is forgiving that we are forgiven,

and it is dying that we are born to eternal life.
