Our psalm celebrates the compassion and forgiveness of God.  We might ask why doesn’t God strike down the tyrant, the war monger, the drug baron or the evil person who makes life a misery for others?

The God of sovereign power is mild in judgement and governs with great lenience (Wisdom).  God is like that wise farmer who does not destroy the wheat by pulling up the darnel.  Every opportunity is given to repent before the final sorting out.  God’s love extends to all his creatures, even to the most evil sinner whose behaviour totally contradicts the image and likeness of God.  God’s love can never be anything less than 100 per cent since God is love.

O Lord, you are good and forgiving

full of love to all who call.

The psalmist makes an earnest plea for a favourable hearing to some request.  Notice the clever bargaining: if you are seen to answer our prayers, Lord, all the nations will come to adore you.  I’m sure God has the humour to enjoy such cajoling!
