Unforgettable Choice

It’s good to be chosen, but to be left aside is desolation.  From schoolyard team-picking to more lethal adult versions.  Do you know what I’m talking about?  Are you one too?

Riona is.  After three children and twelve years of marriage, her husband no longer wants to be married.  A younger partner, a newer model.  Riona gets left behind.

Mr. Keeble is.  Three decades with the same company.  A top position becomes vacant.  He should get it, but the Board has different ideas.  They want youth - the one thing Keeble doesn’t have.

‘A small guy in a tall world’

‘A lost ball in tall grass’

‘One brick short of a load’

You can add your own phrase.  If you’ve been there and this describes you, you’ve come to the right Sunday.  God has a peculiar passion for the forgotten.  Have you noticed?  See his hand on the festered skin of the leper?  Notice how he responds to the touch of the woman with a haemorrhage.  See him beckoning little Zacchaeus down?

The message is the same.  What society puts out, God puts in.  What the world writes off, God picks up.

Today’s Gospel is the last parable Jesus tells on his final earthly week.  This is an important message: he chooses you.  You are his and he has a place for you.

It feels good to be chosen.
