At the core of the Christian faith is the uniqueness and universality of the salvation of Jesus.  True God and true man, he is the one Saviour of the world because he alone accomplished the Father’s universal plan of salvation.  He is “the way and the truth and the life,” as he declares in today’s gospel reading.  Jesus is the “way” that leads to the Father.  He teaches us that the “way” to God is through faith and filial obedience to his will.  Jesus is also the “way” because by his passion, death and resurrection, he opens the “way to heaven” and makes it possible for us to appear before God.

Jesus is the “truth” because he is the fullness of God’s revelation.  God spoke in former times through the prophets, but in the fullness of time, he speaks to us through his Son.

Jesus is the “life” because he alone gives eternal life.  With his death and resurrection, he conquered death and brings us the fullness of life.

Jesus Christ is indeed unique.  And “it is precisely this uniqueness of Christ which gives him an absolute and universal significance, whereby, while belonging to history, he remains history’s centre and goal”.
