Psalm 118 is a long psalm rejoicing in the gift of God’s law.  The 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet are used in turn to begin eight verses of four lines.  Some name for the law of God is mentioned in every couplet.

Today’s excerpt mentions God’s word … law … promise … commands … precepts.

The law is not regarded in a legalistic sense but as the gift of God’s wisdom to guide us on our road of life.

Solomon prayed for a gift worth more than gold and silver when he asked for the light to discern between good and evil.  The guidance of God’s law is the treasure hidden in the field, the pearl beyond price.

The Prayer of the Church takes a section of this psalm practically every day at midday to call our wandering ways back to God’s law.  Every day it asks us whether we are seeking God’s will or our own way.
