Which is more important, ‘family values’ or the ‘value of the family’?  What’s it worth?  We are continually being invited to broaden our understanding of ‘family’ because old models are being stretched.  The Holy Family in its time was hardly the norm.  But look at the child they reared!

The stable at Bethlehem was the emergency shelter for Mary, Joseph and Jesus.  The ongoing stable, shelter and stability that enabled Jesus ‘to grow in wisdom and stature’ was his family.

We flourish or wither in the shade of one another.  There are times when as mother or father,  wife or husband, sister or brother, daughter or son, we are called to ‘give way’, in the best sense of that phrase, to one another.  It is giving another the space to become the unique person God has called him or her to be.

It is very basic - compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and of course forgiveness, which allows us to get back on track when we mess up.  And by the way, there is no such thing as the perfect family!  Be thankful for the one you have.
