O Lord, make us free from everything which would make life useless and ugly.

Save us from the unteachable spirit that will not learn; the ungrateful spirit which never says thanks; the unhappy spirit which is filled with complaints and discontent.

Save us from the disobliging spirit which grudges any help it has to give; the discourteous spirit which never thinks of the feelings of others;  the disobedient spirit which will accept nothing but its own way.

Give us a sense of responsibility, that we may know that we can neither live nor die to ourselves.  A sense of duty, that we may leave nothing that we ought to do, undone; a sense of gratitude, that we may offer thanks to you by trying to live more fully as you would have us do.

Amen.

William Barclay.
