23rd  Sunday in Ordinary Time

---------------------------------------

Know your place

It often seems like some  kind of preordained plan that gatherings at meetings or churches fill from the back, up to the front.

Could it be a hang-over from the one time custom where you had a section for well-to-do families in some parishes?  ‘High money, High Mass’ etc?  Thankfully that’s no longer the case.  People sit in fairly equal manner in churches.  Still, in more subtle ways, people make distinctions all the time.

How you dress, what you drive, where you live, your lifestyle, even your surname dictates the attitude you get.  It’s as wrong now as it was in the time of the apostle James (second reading) - who calls for what it is.

The Gospel reminds us that impaired hearing can have long-term implications on speaking and reading abilities.  No more that the deaf-mute Jesus met, we need to come to our senses.  We need a sense of empathy for one, to realise that Christ is the healer of all that divides us, from our God, from one another, from our true selves.  That his call is for everyone: rich, poor, healthy, sick, disabled, the celebrated and the forgotten.  Anything less than that is not the Gospel.

‘Do not try to combine faith in Jesus Christ… with the making of distinctions’

(Second reading)
