We all face defining moments, when the reality of our lives tests our faith.  But when we sit under our own particular furze tree, God sends his angel to nourish and strengthen us, so that we can carry on with the journey.  It is at such times that Jesus invites us to believe in him.  He promises to be the food for our journey to God.  He offers us his flesh to give us life, to renew our hope and to raise us up, so that like Elijah we can make that long and sometimes difficult journey to come to the presence of God.  In the Eucharist, Jesus feeds us and strengthens us as we make that journey.  He is also the goal of our journey, because to come to him is to come to Horeb, into the very presence of God himself.  And we make that journey under the shadow of his  tree - the cross of Christ - which is at the heart of every Eucharist.  As Paul reminds us: “Christ loves us and gave himself up as a sacrifice to God”.

Each Eucharist we celebrate is a defining moment in our lives, because God invites us to “get up and eat” , to accept the nourishment which he offers, to be renewed in faith, to reject the temptation of doubt and despair which lead to death. At each Eucharist we commit ourselves anew to following Jesus, to a deeper faith in his promise that he will lead us to eternal life.  Stop complaining”, Jesus tells us, “doubt no longer.  Anyone who eats this bread will live forever”.  This mass is a decisive moment because it defines who we are and where we are heading.  Beneath the shadow of Christ’s tree, we journey towards God’s kingdom and recommit ourselves to its values.
