The followers of Jesus were astonished to discover that they enjoyed the same relationship with God that Jesus had.  They realised that the same love that God had for his Son was bestowed on them as well.  They could trust God with everything because they were his children.

There is something in a name.  We become what we are called.  To belong to a great family is an inspiration to noble living and so, even more, to bear the name of the family of God is to have a standard to live up to.

But, as John points out, we are not merely called the children of God, we are the children of God.  And if that means being despised by the world, we are experiencing only what Jesus Christ had already experienced.

When Jesus came into the world, he was not recognised as the Son of God. The world preferred its own ideas and rejected his.  The same is bound to happen to any of God’s children.
