Patrick,
the ex-slave, dared to light the fire on Slane Hill, to the acute
embarrassment of the monarch. Little
did he realise that it was not just a fire Patrick lit, but a great
light. Over 1,500 years later,
thousands climb a high mountain because of Patrick, and flock to his
penitential island.
All
across Ireland churches and schools are called after him. Worldwide too: St. Patrick’s Churches in
Nigeria outnumber those here, and St. Patrick is the secondary patron of the
country. There is the famed St.
Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue and the less well-known St. Patrick’s
mud-church just completed among the high hills of Central Kenya.
Is
this great light beginning to fade for us?
It’s true that the tiger is deadliest in the dark, but a strong light
scares him. We have been given the
light of the world. The Tiger has
been terrorising us of late, but are we hiding our light? An example: the media are bemused over
naming the new monument on O’Connell Street; spike, needle, poker or
worse! When viewed from Connolly
Station it is a magnificent pinnacle of light, symbolising the prehistoric
Celtic fascination with light and how an ex-slave once and for all divinised
it!
