The shorter writings of John on these Sundays are often called ‘love letters to the early Church’.  In these letters, John makes it clear that relationship to God cannot be separated from relationship to others.  These relationships are characterised by love - exclusive love of God and inclusive love of neighbour.

You can’t be fully human on your own.  You can’t be a Christian on your own either.  There is no such thing as solitary Christian.  We are linked to one another in all sorts of ways.  It is part of being human and part of being Christian.

We’re linked to Christ and all other Christians by an invisible bond.  This bond is precious.  It was Christ who wished it and it was he who best described it:  ‘I am the vine and you are the branches’.

And we need to pruned.  When difficulties come our way, we should remember our cousins in creation, the vines.  Like them we learn that the primary purpose of all pruning is abundant life.  Ours will bring us to the perfection of resurrection.
