In baptism, we are given the gift of community.  As part of the Church we are to be the good news for others.  We do this as a group of weak and sinful people who know suck a task is impossible on our own.  Our world sees weakness as a sign of failure, yet in Christ even the failure of the cross is turned into the means of our salvation.  A world that cannot acknowledge weakness is one that cannot show compassion.  Yet we have a high priest that suffers with us (Com-passion).  As our psalmist puts it: “we place all our hope in you.”  As people of the kingdom our focus is always on the grace and mercy of our Redeemer who is beyond all human understanding.

Our gospel story comes directly before the healing at Jericho.  Perhaps we need to be healed of our areas of blindness, bitterness and false division.  Perhaps we are being called to the love of one another even when it hurts: that is the cost of community.  John and James wanted signs of success, yet as someone once said, “we are called to be faithful, not successful.”

NOTICES

Silver Jubilee of Pope John Paul II

Thanks to all who attended the Mass last Monday evening.

Some facts about Pope John Paul II.  Karol Wojtyla was born on the 18th May 1920 in Wadowice near Cracow.  He made his First Communion when he was 9, Confirmed at 18 and came from a deeply religious family.  His mother died when he was 9.  He enrolled in Cracow’s University in 1938.  The Nazi occupation forces closed the university in 1939 and Karol had to work in a quarry and  then in a chemical factory to earn his living.  In 1942 aware of his call to the priesthood, he began courses in the clandestine seminary of Cracow.  After the second world war, he continued his studies in the major seminary of Cracow and in the faculty of theology of the Jagiellonian University until his priestly ordination in Cracow on Nov. 1st 1946.

In 1948 he was vicar in various parishes in Cracow.  In 1958 he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Cracow.  In 1964 he was made Archbishop of Cracow, and a Cardinal in 1967.  Since the start of his Pontificate in 1978 John Paul II has completed 95 pastoral visits outside of Italy, 142 within Italy.  He has presided over beatifications and canonisations, he has held 8 consistories and he has created 201 Cardinals.  He has convened 6 plenary meetings of the College of Cardinals.  From 1978 to today the Holy Father has presided at 15 synods of Bishops.
