Friends of a Friendly God

List all the qualities of your best friend:

* He accepts me.

* He makes times for me.

* I always leave his presence feeling better.  Today Jesus calls you ‘friend’.  His choice is personal.  God doesn’t need many people to bring about change.  He only needs individuals: a Moses to bring down a mighty Egyptian Pharoah; a wandering nomad Abraham to start a nation; a lineage for his son that included an adulterer and murderer (David) and a prostitute (Rahab).

God isn’t choosy - we are.  We strive to preserve our power, possessions and position.  Our drive to get to the top is instinctive.

But Jesus teaches us another way.  It lies in giving - even giving our very lives instead of grabbing.

The secret lies in seeing myself as a friend, not a servant whose future is precarious and negotiable.  The difference lies in what they know.  It’s about being brought from the place of obedience (servant) to the place of intimacy (friend); from functioning without insight, to knowing the overall plan.

When you see somebody who’s clearheaded in the midst of confusion, yet cool when the heat is on, it could be that they know a secret - shared with them by a friend: the kind of friend Jesus calls us to be.
