James has the same urgency and strength of expression as
Jesus on many occasions during his ministry.
Today’s reading highlights the social teaching of the early
Church. It also gives support to
parishioners who are campaigning for health and safety in the workplace, as
well as paternity rights.
We have seen in the tribunals of recent years that
absolute greed corrupts absolutely.
Time spent on safaris in the ‘celtic jungle’ created more fat cats
than hospital beds. During the frantic
conversion of ‘mattress money’ from pound to euro in 2001, was there any
sense of ‘storing treasure that will endure’?
The works of Shakespeare, Dante, Dickens, Lewis and
Tolkein all echo the words of St. James.
The plays of John B. Keane also point out that there is no
anticorrosion warranty for greed and dishonesty.
