It was a day of excitement and expectancy.  Two hundred adults, mostly teenagers or younger,  would be baptised on the morrow.  Their catechumenate complete, they had spent the past week at the Central Mission in immediate preparation.  Their parents (who were not Christians) had come on this last day; their consent was necessary.  There was much loud talk in the compound.  I asked the catechist. ‘Oh no, they are not objecting,’ he said, ‘they are just telling the young people that after baptism they would be different; they would be leaving behind the beliefs and sacrifices of their ancestors - no going back’.

There was expectancy too, during those days at the Jordan.  John the Baptist had a message: ‘Repent’, he said.  They came, they listened, they went into the waters as a sign of heart-change.  Could he be the Messiah? ‘Oh no’, John told them; ‘someone is coming, more powerful than I am’.  He was already there; Jesus allowed himself to be ‘baptised’ by the hesitant John; anticipating the baptism of his own bloody death which would take away the sins of the world.  The Voice confirming.

Yes, baptism takes away sins, but the non-Christian parents at the Mission had already seen something more: the baptised among them were a people transformed; new creatures living their faith; apostolic by their example, marked indelibly; membership of the body of Christ transcending the limits of nations, cultures and races; inspiring saints and martyrs.
