Mary plays the part in this Gospel of a very shrewd woman.  She just makes an observation that they have no wine.  But Jesus knows that she intends more than that.  She wants him to do something.  He protests that it is too early in his ministry for that kind of thing.  But Mary’s response is to let the servants know they are to do whatever he tells them.  We can presume that Mary made sure Jesus overheard this.

So here Jesus finds himself faced with remedying a situation he possibly hasn’t faced before.  The ending of the Gospel informs us that this was the first sign or miracle he performed.  So he is expected to perform a miracle.

All he does is ask them to fill six stone water jars.  Did he know that they would turn into wine? John, the Gospel writer, usually tells when Jesus knows exactly what he is doing.  Here John does not comment either way.

What’s important is that God changed the water into wine, the situation was saved and all of us have learned that our little word, action or act of faith can bear abundant fruit.  Let us never be afraid to get involved.
