The Lord is compassion and love.

Forgiveness is surely the most sincere and beautiful manifestation of love.  Today’s readings celebrate the triumph of forgiveness over bitterness and vengeance.

It is one thing to say that the Lord has compassion:  it is greater to say that the Lord is compassion.  Since compassionate love is part of the nature of God, it follows that God’s forgiveness is never less than 100 per cent.  People ask for a full absolution, as if there were a 90 per cent absolution or anything less.  Since God is compassionate love, when he takes away our sins it is as far as the east is from the west.  However, our reception of God’s love may be less than 100 per cent if our sorrow or purpose of amendment is not sincere.

With the psalmist we celebrate the wonders of divine mercy.

My soul, give thanks to the Lord, all my being, bless his holy name.

But words are empty if not backed up by deeds.  It is our willingness to forgive others that we show that we are true children of this forgiving God.
