Jesus, in his home town, reads one of the prophets - the reading for the day.  Then he astonishes everyone by saying that what he read is being fulfilled even as people listen to him.  It sounds very cheeky.  This means that he is the Messiah, the one who will come to redeem Israel.  It is a very strong claim - that the Holy Spirit has been given to him in a special way.  He has been commissioned to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour - the new messianic age of freedom and glory.

Jesus was quick to see the connection between Scripture and his own life.  We can be far slower.  He took a risk by saying what he did.  Most of us can be devout cowards.  It is good to be devout but we do run away from what scripture is saying to our real-life situations?

That cowardice has side effects.  The poor will hear less of the good news then, the captives will stay enslaved, the blind will remain in a dim gloom and the downtrodden need not expect much liberation from the likes of us.

May the Word of God set us on fire with love for God and his people.
