Lord Longford famously wrote a book titled ‘Humility’.  Funny because it’s a quality that evaporates when it’s brought to the fore.  We can seek it, recognise its absence, but we really can’t achieve it.  I can humble myself but I can’t make myself humble.

It’s a disposition, a stance in life, ultimately a gift from God.  Even St. Benedict (in his Rule) compared humility to a ladder, where climbing up is achieved by humbling ourselves, and going down by building ourselves up.  The humility ladder is the only ladder where the only way up is down and the only way down is up!

Humility is not self-hatred.  We aren’t asked to hate ourselves.  It’s more self-forgetfulness, while pride is a concentration on self.  Humility doesn’t call us to apologise for the qualities we possess.  True humility is not thinking ill of yourself but not thinking of yourself differently from the way you’d think of anybody else.

While some ignore humility and crave notice and attention, others play games with humility, feigning a lowly attitude about some quality or ability they have, in the secret hope that the hearer will lift them up.

‘If you were half as important as you think you are, you would be twice as important as you really are.’
