22nd Sunday of the Year

The Ten Commandments, the Law of the Lord, about which Moses speaks, are often seen as some kind of imposition, as obstacles put in place by God, to test humankind on its pilgrim journey through life. The Commandments are better seen as the response of a people who have experienced God's goodness in the events of the Exodus. The people of Israel knew that their God cared for them because this God brought them safely from slavery in a foreign land to freedom in a land of their own. They wanted to show gratitude for this graciousness and they expressed this by pledging to live lives of moral integrity and fidelity to the God who had remained steadfast in love towards them. Against this background the moral law is not an imposition; it is a freely chosen response of gratitude. When Jesus came along something of this original vision was already lost. By this time the laws and customs had been multiplied but had lost their original orientation. The religion of many of his contemporaries had become a sham because it lacked the inner conviction which provided its original inspiration. Jesus reminds them, and us, that religious rituals and liturgies not matched by lives of integrity are hollow.

De La Salle Brothers

Next Tuesday the three remaining De La Salle Brothers (Thomas, Bernard & Alphonsus) are leaving Castlebar. The Brothers were first invited here by Cannon Patrick Lyons and they came here in September 1888. At first they lived over Irwins Shop in Ellison St. and then moved into the present monastery in 1889. The Brothers came here to teach in St. Patrick's Boy's N.S. (The present Family Centre). Later on when St. Gerald's Boy's Secondary School was built in 1909(The present Parish Centre) they taught there too. There were six brothers at first, later on the number grew to twelve. The Brothers came here like the Mercy Sisters before them to provide education for our children when there was very little opportunity for learning and people were very poor. Over the years they have made a wonderful contribution to our parish and surrounding areas. Thousands of boys owe them a great debt of gratitude for the education, the guidance and preparation for life that they provided. Their spirit and work lives on today in St. Patrick's and St. Gerald's schools. We are sad after all these years that the Brothers are leaving. We wish the three remaining Brothers every blessing and happiness in the years remaining to them. Later on we will have a special function and event to mark the Brother's presence and work in Castlebar.
