It somehow feels right that the month of November is the one when we think in a special way about our dead friends and relations.  For the ancient Irish, even before the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, the beginning of November was an especially holy time since the great Celtic feast of Samhain (1st November) was the beginning of the new year.  Our Celtic ancestors believed that the frontiers between earth and the underworld dissolved on the eve of Samhain which we call Halloween.  They felt particularly close to the dead around the beginning of November.

Our Christian tradition of remembering the dead has two elements to it.  The first, celebrated particularly on All Saints Day, acknowledges that our loved ones can intercede for us and that they have never stopped caring about us.  One of the funeral prefaces states, “Lord, for your faithful people, life is changed, not ended.”  And so our deceased parents are still our parents, our deceased spouses are still our spouses.  We celebrate them, we give thanks for their lives and their sharing in Christ’s life and we ask their intercession.

In November we pray also for the dead.  The Church teaches us that some people, undergo a period of final purification, after death, before making their home in heaven.  The faithful departed - or ‘the holy souls’ - are our brothers and sisters, our friends and relations.  It is because the faithful departed are still part of the community that is the Church that we offer up a share of our graces and spiritual benefits for them, just as they no doubt are praying for us.

Perhaps the most heart-warming thing about the way our forefathers and mothers prayed, was the great warmth and intimacy about their prayer.  Theirs was the language of the home and the hearth.  As we keep our departed loved ones to the fore, at home and at hearth, maybe we could make our own of this old Munster prayer, said when passing a graveyard:

“May God and Mary bless you all; you once were as we are now, and one day we will be as you are.  We pray with you, let you all pray with us.  May God and Mary pray with you.”                                                                  (Martin Browne)
